So last night and today are the only 2 times this problem has happened. After sitting for several minutes in gear clutch pedal to the floor the truck stsrts to lurch like the clutch is engaging. I shut of the truck put it in first and while starting it does the same thing then when I give it some revs it went away for the following 20 minutes of driving.

Just finished putting in a brand new motor but i never disconnected the clutch line from the slave.

Flywheel is freshly surfaced
Clutch slave is new as of 6 months ago
Clutch master replaced 6 months ago
Clutch disc and pressure plate also new 6 months ago
Transmission fresh rebuild 6 months ago

ok so turns out my pilot bearing is jacked and occasionally grabs the input shaft even with the clutch engaged. time to pull the trans again :cautious:

yep, pilot bearing would grab the input shaft and try to move the truck.
the rollers were scattered inside the bearing when removed.
that was when the truck had about 180,000 miles on it, original bearing.

when the clutch is engaged everything is rotating at the same speed, grabbing the input shaft should do nothing while driving.

by clutch engaged i meant clutch pedal pressed sorry for the confusion.

if you remember still i have a few questions.
first the pilot bearing has a little rubber seal on one end does that go towards the engine or the flywheel
second do i just press the new one in till its flush with the flywheel on the trans side?

The side with the seal faces toward the transmission (not engine). Yes, press it in until flush.

Also be sure to check the end of your trans input shaft for damage. Minor damage often can be cleaned up or ignored if it's very minimal, but if it's gouged, you may need to replace it.

the manual says the seal faces out, towards the transmission.
makes sense to keep the clutch dust out.

"insert with special tool" for me that was a socket that only contacted the outer portion of the bearing.
I installed a new bearing last spring during an engine swap, probably just installed it flush.
see where the old one is, the shell should still be there.

and what 4x4 says
