i wish my job was somewhere else. this stupid county raised my property taxes from 1700 to 2800 this year. the appraiser went on tv a few weeks ago and said they were raising it across the boards 30-40%.

Sounds like you still have it pretty good.

Our property taxes were like $8000 last year.

Indiana capped property taxes at 1% of property value to protect seniors on a fixed budget. In return, they raised sales taxes 1%.

They add special stormwater charges and trash removal fees to the bill, but it’s not bad. IIRC, we adjust property values every two years.

the thing that kills me is i have been fighting the property taxes every year because our house was not able to be lived. we finally were able to knock it down this year. the city knew it was not livable but kept raising the taxes. it was a 900sqft two bed, one bath built in 42 and has a garage with small one bedroom apartment above on a half acres of land. i have it homesteaded with a veteran exemption. the taxes should have been around 1700. i have to go to the city board every year to fight this crap.

my wife and i have been living in the apartment until we could save up to knock the house down and try and get another built.

all my friends pay 5-12k a year in property taxes here in nueces county. the stupid schools add more than half the cost of the taxes because they are set up just like the government with so many people as principles, vice principles, and administrators who make a good bit over 100k a year. most of the people at the school who are administrators at vice principle, internet director, principle, or in that level of the schools makes 125k+ a year. its not like when i was at the high school and there was one principle and one vice principle, they have doubled and tripled the amount of positions because family and friends needed good paying jobs too. just like working here on base or at the city, congress, etc.

what makes me even more mad is every year i go fight it and the appraisal district supervisor tells me i can fight all i want, they will get their money, whether i like it or not. they will raise the taxes each year and i can just live with it or leave. i cannot just leave. my job is only here or cherry point nc.

stupid taxes. roads are horrible, city is a huge dumpster with trash on the sidewalks and street sides.

every year i go to the appraisal district building to fight this crap and i totally understand why there is an armed constable with metal detectors and xray you have to go through to get into the building. i can easily see some people going in there and doing something because of this bs. the city has told us they would rather all us working class people move out so they can have just retired people live here who don't argue about taxes.

i guess i just need to complain so i don't go over there and do something stupid. prison sounds horrible for a retirement plan

Corpus Cristi sounds like a bad retirement destination, too.

Seems like they’re driving the town into the ground.

They jacked mine up by $400 last year. That amount pales in comparison to my homeowners insurance - that has more than doubled in the past couple years. Was paying $600/year, now the cheapest I can find is $1300/year.

I can afford it but it frustrates the hell out of me because I know a lot of people can't. The "live with or leave" thing is pretty ridiculous too, same thing here, their attitude is move away if you can't afford it. My family has been here for 5 generations... and we are supposed to pack up because a bunch of rich assholes from CA and the east coast are taxing people out of their homes? Even if we wanted to leave, where do you go? There is nowhere in the US that's not experiencing the same situation right now. This situation is going to come to a head sooner or later, it is totally unsustainable.

Ours actually varied over the last 10 years. I'll be interested to see what next yrs is. Property values have raised over the last 3 years but the tax stayed the same, so I'm waiting for the surprise.

i bought this house and land for 42k about 10 years ago. i have done nothing to improve it because the house was in such bad shape that i knew it was going to need major work. so we got estimates on fixing it and the estimates were the same price as getting a new one built. so no improvements and the appraisal is now up to 145k but when i tell the appraisal district to buy me out, they say its not their job to do anything but estimate our value. i told them the value is outrageous and show pics and they give their don't give a crap attitude.

and shran is exactly right. we got a bunch of rich rick heads from cali who didn;t like the rules there and they moved here and got on all the city boards and made all these stupid rules to make it just like cali.

and its actually not a good place to retire to. there is fishing and wind surfing for things to do. thats it. nothing for kids to do to stay out of trouble and no places to go other than the one mall and the beach. most people cannot go outside more than walking to their cars because its so hot here for 9 months of hte years. thats the only thing i like is the temp during the warm months.

That home in Florida is an easy $12m. Our taxes are crazy. The governor is a nut along with the rest of the state and local governments. Must of us peasants have to use an outhouse. It's terrible here. Whatever you do, stay away from Florida.

Id have to consider converting a 24’ box truck into a apartment & live out of that if things in my area were that bad. (and if I were single, she would never go for that).
