In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
I learned long ago that the thicker these stickers get, the easier it is for a thief to scrape the stack off without damaging the top sticker, and re-gluing the stack to their license plate when they don't want to pay for a new registration sticker for their car. Cops think you are current on your registration if you are displaying the currently proper color sticker so you won't get pulled over with an expired sticker.... I even go one step farther and not only do I keep only one sticker on my plate, but once I have the new sticker stuck well onto my plate, I take a razor blade and put an "X" into the sticker and maybe a few more cuts. This way, if a thief tries to steal the sticker, it deters them once it starts coming apart in pieces or hopefully they see the cuts before they even attempt to remove it...... Just an old habit I have. Plus, it really does look tacky when a car has many years of stickers stacked on top of each other.
If you can count my stickers, you're too close.

That is a really good idea. Stealing it.
Oh No ! Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned that. Might now have a lot of missing registration stickers across the country because of this post ! :stop:

We had them for a few years... then they did away with them. It easier to just pull everyone over.

I never understood the point, we still had a windshield sticker and you can't get the windshield inspection sticker without your registration being up to date so why have a separate sticker on the dang license plate? Out of all the BS this state does, vehicle inspection and registration is one of the few things I actually like about NJ.

The only inspections we regularly have here in Calif. are "smog" inspections every 2 years (unless you are putting a salvaged vehicle back on the road). And if you don't pass a smog inspection and have the inspection results electronically sent to the DMV by the authorized smog station, you won't get that little sticker. There are recourses if your vehicle is repairable, but it is another source of red-tape and another hoop to jump through in order to convince a State Qualified Referee to allow you one more year on the road... Its such a scam here in California... I pay the California DMV close to $700 a year to register 3 vehicles ranging from a 1999 to a 2013. PLUS another $75 (approx.) for each vehicles smog inspection every 2 years. And that does not count any expenses in repairs to make a vehicle "passable". And that is not considering that we have the highest Gas Tax in the country which is supposed to pay for road repairs and ect.... Ya Right ! Another scam to keep the working man down.

Wow....time to move. Gotta ask...you live in a state that has the highest taxes and cost of living in the USA (xcept for maybe NY).
The state burns every year. More than likely it's gonna break off and become an island, making Navada's west area becoming ocean front.
It's hot, and has a serious water problem.
And you all don't rake the forests for cryin out loud!!!
Whats the big attraction ?
