Pushrod doesn't come off the Master

There is a one-way clip that holds it on, so it can be attached to the master but can't be pulled off the master
It can be pulled off but clip usually breaks

Yes, unbolt pushrod from pedal, then unbolt master from firewall and then twist master and pull it out of the firewall, it has a twist lock

Any tips for getting the assembly past the brake master cylinder's pushrod? Not much room to pull the brake master cylinder and booster foward and the spring in the master cylinder is just tough enough to make it difficult to press in the rod.
