Holy shit, I've never had that happen before.

So I go out to start the truck and fires right up, but there is this awful nasty noise coming from the, transmission? Damnit, my new throw out bearing exploded! Press the clutch pedal, feels normal, shift gears with the clutch in, feels good... What the.... Turn the key off.... And the starter was still engaged cranking the engine. Put it in second, and dumped the clutch to kill it, right? You would too. The starter over powered the the (rather worn out) e-brake, and my foot on the brake and lurched me forward 'til I burried my foot and killed it.

Holy hell what just happened...

I now smell smoke. Shit.scramble to pop the hood, reach for the battery cable... Which was hot as hell, wires are smoking, jimmied it free and it stopped.

Fired it up, on and off half a dozen times and everything still works so far.

Wow.

Yes, the solenoid can arc out and cause the starter to keep starting...or not stop starting...

I had it happen on the highway in a blizzard and had to yank the battery cable to stop it...thought it was the ignition switch first and almost pulled the thing apart...but learned it was the solenoid and swapped it out...never happened again after that but it made me seriously consider quick disconnects on the battery...

That's a bummer, I think it's only 2 years old.

I still have about 3 of those solenoids sitting in a box of spare parts...if I was in the junkyard and saw one that looked fairly new I'd pick it up for pennies...sometimes they just said don't worry about it...

But the problem with them is not so much age as quality...or if someone played hacky sack with them on a slow day...

It could be other things but that is the most common and the only one that I encountered...

Yeah, I could see the quality issue, I think I bought whatever the cheapest starter was haha. I'll probably wait 'til it happens again before I touch it.

The ring gear was shot on my 2.8 and it liked to stick starter relays. I went thru a couple different starters, they never seemed to matter much.

I put in a different engine 6 years ago and (knocking on wood) haven't touched a relay since.
