I've replaced the starter but the manual states I can only place three shims @ .100 depth. I have three shims on the starter, still grinding. All the teeth are on the flywheel. I do not know what to do in order to make it crank without grinding.

shims are for chevys... finger tighten all your bolts and make sure the starters seated before you tighten it..

They are for GM applications... I always liked the ability to adjust them if necessary.

My brother in law use to run an auto parts machine shop and I would have him just rebuild all my Ford starters... if the nose cone wasn't worn out/busted... it got repaired.

Sometimes the engine plate hole will wear or get distorted... it could be out of spec far enough to not allow proper engagement between starter gear and flywheel.

Try getting the starter set in and bolts finger tight. See how much the starter moves around.

Try tightening it up in different positions... closest to or further away. It might be the difference.

It's all good... it's just what we try to do round these parts.

If I wouldn't have... certainly someone else would have.
