Speedometer/Odometer not working (96 XLT 2.3 5-Speed)

Ok, so here is the spiel.

Speedometer/Odometer has not worked properly since purchase. However, on two occasions it has worked (seemingly told the correct speed, not positive didn't have gps to verify with) and then just outright quick 10-15 seconds later.

I have replaced:

OSS (on the transmission tailshaft)
VSS (on the rear end)

Things I've done:

- The original OSS provided voltage with-in spec when tested on multi-meter
- Original OSS had red gear (not white)
- Wiring and harness leaning from front of transmission to sensor looks fine
- Noted that with original OSS, OBD2 scanner registered speed signal
-- Registered speed vs GPS speed was ~10mph difference

Notes:

- My speedo is the digital type (non-cable driven)
- My truck is 2WD

Anyone have any clue where I should look next?

Mines just a cable that goes into the transfer case. I had speedo issue twice. Once it was the gear, the other time it was the transfer case.

Sorry I always forget something. Mine is 2WD and does not appear to have a cable at all. It only has the two wires from the connector that clips onto the OSS.

No one has any clue? Visiting a junk yard today. Hoping a cheap instrument panel may fix er up.

I got lucky and found an 01 explorer sport trac, pulled its cluster and brought it home. From my understanding the temperature gauge in the 96 Ranger has a special resistor on the removable circuit board so I swapped it across.

Was unlucky that the tachometer of the new cluster was sticky so swapped the tach motor from my original cluster.

I'd advise you having a obd2 scanner and taking off the cluster face when you do your first start, make absolutely sure to take a picture of any gauge positions (if they do not come to 0 rest, on the needle when the truck is off)

Fire up for the first time and manually set any of the a fore mentioned needles (referencing values in your obd2 scanner for accuracy) once that is set, carefully pull the cluster back out and reinstall the face.

The only thing I can really remember using the scanner for was ensuring my tachometer was giving an accurate value since i had to replace the motor and then manually set the needle because it was a bit off.
