I have a '91 Ranger 2.3l, with no working speedometer/odometer. I replaced my speedometer cable, the speedometer sensor (aka speedometer pinion gear). The speedometer gauge in the instrument panel appears to be working, as I can see the needle move when I spin the cable by hand. However the needle never moves when I have everything connected and I drive it on the road.
I have to assume the problem is somewhere on the end of the transmission, where the (plastic) pinion gear bolts into the hole of the left end of transmission. What do I need to do next, to get my speedometer to work? Should I replace the plastic gear?
