I finally got my 93 ranger 5.0 swap up started. it sounds great. As i finish the driveshafts i figure the speed issues should be ironed out as well.

Correct me if i am wrong but as i understand:
-the 98 explorer 5.0 needs a speed input from the rear axle.
-the 93 ranger is cable driven with a VSS
-the 93 ranger has a sensor in the rear diff but this is the ABS sensor

i have a hole in my BW4406 TC for a gear. it actually has an old VSS sensor in it from the f150 it was pulled out of.

can i install the rear diff VSS from the explorer onto my ranger and have the ECM/tranny work correctly.

then install the VSS from the ranger into the transfer case to run my speedo.

or is there another option?

The rear axle VSS needs conditioning to become usable.

Later 4 cyl Ranger GEM, 99 -01 Explorer ABS controller and G-Force sensor or a Dakota Digital speedometer box can all be used.

Or 1980's Fords with cruise control use a pass through speedometer cable drive that includes the VSS signal generator. Simple 2 wire hookup.

1998 Explorer V8 computer needs Corrected VSS input which was done by GEM in 1998, but...........

If you have a transfer case with speedo gear/VSS then that is a Corrected VSS signal outputting 8,000PPM which is what computer needs
If you are using 1993 instrument cluster and speedo then you can also use speedo cable hooked there as well.
If using newer instrument cluster then same transfer case VSS would go to both computer and speedo, and of course cruise control if so equipped

You may need to change the Driven gear on the speedo/VSS unit to match rear axle ratio and tire size.

BW4406 can have gear driven or tone wheel VSS, not sure if the tone wheel versions can be used directly to 1998 computer, they were hooked directly to newer computers(2001 and up) and computer did the Corrected speed(8,000PPM) and sent that out to electronic speedometer

The rear axle VSS can just be used for ABS as before

Rear axle VSS is the same on explorers or rangers, or F-series for that matter, they send out 12,000PPM +
Which is fine for ABS but all Ford speedos need 8,000PPM, same for 2000 and earlier computers
So changing VSS doesn't change PPM

thanks for the help guys

the TC came out of a 98 f150 i believe. I am using the 93 ranger dash.

so if i am following correctly, i can plug the speedo cable/VSS sensor into the TC. Using the cable to drive the speedo and the VSS wire to signal the computer?
