i have an 88 2.0 powersteeringless a/c less, radioless and apparently speakerless truck, i have had cars with only one speaker from the factory, but i have never had anything that came totally without speakers.

so if it came with speakers from the factory would they be installed where the two openings on the top of the dash are? there are plates screwed on but there seems to be tabs for attaching something below the plates. or are these holes for accessing something? they would only fit a 5" speaker maybe but i don't care any speakers are better than no speakers.

has anyone had success with putting speakers in the doors, or do the windows hit? i have looked at pics of other gen 1 rangers on ebay and i haven't seen any that had speakers in the doors.

any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated

My credo
Toonces drives a Ranger . . . . just not very well.
The factory speakers do go on top of the dash. The blank panels are replaced by a grill version of the panels, and the speaker mounts to the tabs that you've seen. The factory bolt-in is an odd size / mounting, about 5", although most any 4" speaker can be adapted into the factory mounts.

I know that I've put 5 1/4" speakers in the gen1 doors, but that was many years ago. Do remember getting them in the lower front corners, and on one that I owned I put a set in the rear lower doors, behind the decompression vents, to get some rear fill.

I just can't believe that you found an '88 model that never had a radio; that's got to be rarer than a virgin at a Viking convention.

there is an antenna wire in the radio hole in the dash and the always powered and key on only power wires hanging down by the empty cb bracket thats mounted on the dash but no evidence of even a savage detachable boom box speaker on the floor set up. and judging by the filthy condition i got it in, its not like the last owner cleaned up any loose wiring anywhere. and there was enough vintage dust under those dash plates to suggest that i was the first to open them in 19 years.

thanks for the info
