i had to use a end wrench to get the bolt out to lower the carrier before i went to a bed mounted spare, the receiver hitch is just 2" away from the bolt head that holds the "trapese" arm up, originaly it was ment for the tire iron to be used, but thats impossible once a receiver hitch is put on. i never though about putting my spare behind the wheel well, not sure if it would work with the cap & the rake (angle) of the rear door glass.
