Well, somebody ripped off my spare. Finally found a wheel and old tire.
On my 97 the rack swings down so you can fight the spare out.
Now...I'm trying to find the bolt that holds the rack up against the frame. I thought it was the same as the wheel lugs, but no.
Any help will be most appreciated.

I believe they are 15mm... i took my holder off this summer. I will confirm this tonight. The bolt that allows the rack to swing down is a 19mm (same as lug nut)

update:

there are 5 bolts that hold the rack to the truck. two on the driverside frame rail, one on the passenger side frame rail (no clue what ford was trying to accomplish here...) and two on the back crossmemeber. all the nuts are 15mm. the bolts are 13mm. the release bolt that allows it to swing down is 19mm just like the lugnuts.

the two bolts that hold it to the crossmemeber are pressed into a steel plate and you won't need a wrench on those two. all the others you will need a 13 and a 15mm socket.

If he doesn't. I might still have the entire assembly from my 93. Won't have time to verify this until friday.

I could sure use that extra bar! The bolt with the eyehook has rusted to the bar, so I can't even carry a spare back there. The tire guy tried to cut it off with a torch, then gave up. So there is just a blob of melted steel where that bolt went. I'm in Chicago and would be happy to pay you for it. Local junkyard has no Rangers that old. What is this bar worth to you?

And I thought my old spare tire carrier parts were garbage. Pretty sure I know exactly where that stuff is in the shed. I'll go out there friday.

Old parts are NEVER garbage. Somebody, somewhere has a need for yours. How else are we gonna keep these fabulous old Rangers on the road forever?

lol that eyebolt is why I bought the bar. mine broke and I grabbed that from the junkyard and took it home and pb blasted it and unfroze the eyebolt in it. put it in my truck. also put a good amount of antisieze on it as well.

If you want the bar, I'll send it for cost of shipping, it will be one less thing in my garage. good news is that you can put another bolt in it to replace the eyebolt. I also coated the bar with POR 15.

will dig it out. I am in North East Indianapolis, so not too far from you

Sounds GOOD! Always happy to help someone clear out the garage! So the nut is intact enough to just screw another eyebolt in there? I know LMC Truck Parts has those eyebolts for sale, so I can easily replace that. Please email me the shipping details to goosby557@sbcglobal.net.

My girlfriend's clown car has that same setup for her spare. Every spring and fall I have to coat the bolt with anti seize so it's use able if she ever gets a flat. And DON"T SKIP the every spring and fall. You'll be fighting with that dang bolt for at least an hour getting the cage to drop!
