My credo
A legend to the old man, a hero to the child...
Never had enough money to seriously consider not doing my own maintenance. But I'm naturally a bit if a tightwad, too. So i hate paying someone to do something i can do myself.

I did lease cars for a while. But that was a special situation. It was the employee lease program here at BMW. No down payment. They took care of all taxes, insurance and maintenance. AND I was driving 30 miles each way to work. It just made sense to put the miles on somebody else’s vehicle. It was still expensive and I got out of the program after a few brief years. I definitely enjoyed always having a brand new BMW in the driveway.
BMWs/Mercedes are the only foreign vehicles id ever allow to grace my driveway.

I actually really liked the few mercedes's ive experenced.

I've bounced back and forth on maintenance. I enjoy working on things if I can do it on my own schedule. When too much breaks at once it stops being a fun distraction and starts being just one more thing on my plate. At that point I'll farm things out to a local shop I trust as needed.

I always do my own maintenance and most everything else, too. The only job I really dislike is disassembling my disc brakes every year, cleaning the rust off the slides and caliper anchors, and lubing everything to keep them working freely. Rear disc brakes + road salt = more maintenance for no gain. If you're braking hard enough to get any benefit from rear discs the weight is all thrown forward onto the front wheels.
I bought a bunch of new cars during the years I worked at the dealer, at least 3 of our salesmen would lease cars for 2 years, figuring they'd never buy brakes or tires. They also made considerably smaller payments than I did and never drove cars more than 2 years old. It wouldn't pay for me to lease now that I'm retired and driving less but I could have saved a lot of money by leasing during my working life when I drove every day.

I actually like the routine maintenance of a vehicle. Bur absolutely hate going to any gas/service station. The thought of having to stop at a station for gas or anything besides Doritos and Mt. Dew, appalls me.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.

Better than plugging it in to recharge.

Nope. A lease is a rental. You never own the thing, just pay to use it. At that point it would be better to buy it outright with cash and trade or sell it when you are done with it.
When I was a kid working detailing, a wealthy man told me as I was cleaning the wheels on his porsche

"Float, Fly or F$%ck, its cheaper to rent!"

For those things, renting is cheaper. But for long term use of a vehicle or a home, renting is bad.

Exactly. Where I live, the average price of a house is around $200,000.00. Average rent for a house is about $1,000 per month. So a renter pays $10,000.00 per year. If he lived in the house for 20 years, he'd pay $200,000.00, and have nothing to show for it. HOWEVER, had he purchased that house, his mortgage payment would be less than the cost of rent, and at the end of the term, he gets a piece of paper that says he owns the house.

For leasing a car, I chose a 2020 Ford Ecosport SE Convenience. I deleted the Ecoboost engine in favour of the 2.0l naturally aspirated engine and intelligent 4WD. I added the interior protection package (floor mats), and a cargo package.

Purchase price is $29,147.00. Let's say I get approved for a 5 year loan, with 0% interest. My payment is $485.78/month. If I lease for five years, I pay $312.00 per month. Over the life of the lease, I've paid $18,720.00. Ford Canada website does not tell me what the buyout price would be, but I'm guessing that would not be something they could tell me at the time I signed the lease. The problem I see is that assuming the lease buy out price would be a little north of $10,000 (what remains to be paid of the original purchase price), I'm ultimately paying more (total) to buy out the lease than the car is worth, because at the five year mark, it's probably worth $20,000 to $25,000. If, however, the lease buyout would be the present value of the car - $18,000, then I can see it maybe working out.
