Should I even try to tow with a A4LD?

I really want to use my 94' Sploder to pull a pop up style camper but im not real confident in the ol' A4LD......
I bought the explorer knowing it had a bad trans. I had a trans that worked perfectly with 65K on it sitting on the floor to swap in.
The explorer has 120K on it and i have had ZERO trouble with the truck since i replaced the trans.

Whats everones experance with towing 600 miles one way with the A4LD?

Should i sell it and try to find a good deal on a newer one with the 5.0L or other V8?

Other options?
Thanks, Todd S.

If the tranny is in good shape and you keep it from hunting (run in D in hills) it should get along fine.

The 5.0 will have the 4R70W which is a vastly better trans, commonly found in half ton pickups.

Not sure what confusing jumble of numbers and letters comprises the trans in the 4.6 Explorers... the parents have an '02 with the 4.0. Engine aside the rest of the car isn't that great.

I've had a pop-up behind my b2 before... not 600 miles but 160 miles.
I tow a 14 foot trailer with 2 atv's behind it ALL the time during deer season.

We've towed a 3/4 ton truck on car hauler with the 92 explorer automatic, about 90 miles... not ideal by any means, but it's what we had to do at the time... and that 92 explorer is still running just fine.

what's my moral? keep it cool and keep it in D with any weight behind it if it's shifting out of OD a lot. don't let it shift back and forth a lot. You should be fine. I ain't had any issues with it.

Even when i tow with my 1ton tow pig i always keep it drive, never overdrive.
I would definitely put on a larger trans cooler....

Its a long way from home if the transmission goes bye bye on me...

Thanks!

Well im goin 1/2 way from okla to cali!! Okla to SW Colorado. (650+ miles).
I have gatherd from A4LD research over the years that if its a good one, they last a long time, bur most die by about 80K.

I have only owned two RBV with A4LD's in them. Both failed. This one "seems" to be good.

+1 on a bigger trans cooler, heat eats up any automatic. But these ones are not great to begin with.

I towed a 20' lowboy filled with my in-law's furniture ~200 miles with my Exploder w/ A4LD in it - never had a problem.

My credo
JESUS Loves Ya!
Like they said...adda a trans-cooler.....if the AOD begins shifting itself in & out of overdrive---you need to leave it in Drive to avoid ruining the transmission....

I know people with the same setup that tow their 17-19 ft boats all over the place and have had no problems over the years they owned their Exploders. As long as the trans is in good shape don't worry about it.

not sure what tranny is in this one but it seems to be handling this DUMP-TRUCK without a problem

On of my old classmates was running a hotshot business here and did that exact thing prolly 10yrs ago for ha ha's.
Oklahoma DOT stopped him and wrote him a warning for not having the proper papers. By law, if you haul it, u better have all your paperwork in order (in a commercial truck).

I find it comical that the guys filming that video also appear to be in a Ranger.
