Hey Hey, got something for ya! When you smell transmission fluid, and cannot determine source of leak...when You see transmission fluid slowly seeping from your 5 speed transmission on a 94 Ranger xlt 4x4....check this out!

On the top of your transmission where the gear shifter is, on the plate on top of the transmission...there are three RUBBER round plugs where the rails feed in....on the backside of the raised plate when the bell housing large end is facing away from you...

News..they dry out, they shrink...THEY LEAK....

So, to solve this issue...you can remove your shifter; carefully cut a hole in your floor around the area to expose the top of the tranny without pulling it; or you could FRY THE INPUT SHAFT and hafta change it out any way, dropping the tranny, and FINALLY discovering where the leak was...your choice...

The plugs are easily removed, screw driver and needle nose, and the replacements are tapped in...just a FYI....

Btw anyone got a tear down image of the gear set up in a 94 5 speed tranny for post? I bought a sweet used tranny from a 3.9 as 4.0's are hard to come by up here, and want to put its guts into my 4.0 bell housing as they are slightly different...grrr. but the gears should be the same...PROVIDING front and main bearing are the same...if not..then its a crap shoot. :icon_cheers:

thanks....

theres no need to hack up your floor to fix the problem. just unbolt the transmission crossmember and let the transmission down a bit will gain you access under the truck.
i did mine from the top with the transmission installed. i just pulled out the shift boot, pulled the old plugs, cleaned 'em up, rtv'd 'em and put 'em back in. no problems a year later. you may have to unbolt the plate bolted to the floor, but definately dont need to cut anything.

another link to look at. they used a pipe taper tap and threaded the holes, then plugged them with pipe plugs.
