Shift knobs

Ok fellas, I've got a '98 XLT 2WD with an M5OD and I cant for the life of me figure out how to remove the shift knob. I need to get a new one since the one I've got on it now is broken and covered in some sort of sticky substance. Anybody dealt with removing the shift knob before? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Pull... Pull... Pull harder... Some heat might help... It's just a press fit... I think I've honestly only had one knob that wasn't loose...

Really? I've never heard of a press fit shift knob, only screw-ons and bolt-ons. So I can pull down the shifter boot and probably just pull as hard as I can?

Yup, its just pressed over the splines on the end of the stick. A heat gun does help.

take a pair of vise grips and clamp them on just snug enough to grip into the rubber and hit up on it a few times with a rubber hammer it will pop right off ..

it shouldn't if your holding the vise grips

i took off the whole lever, brought it into the house and placed it knob first into a pot of boiling water for a few minutes then pulled it right off with a pair of leather welding gloves on. later i just replaced the whole assembly with a hurst shifter.

Well now that I know how to get the shift knob off, I need a new one because the factory knob sucks. I was thinking about drilling and tapping a hole in a river rock and putting that on as my shift knob. Any other ideers?
