I'm planning on a build on my 94 ranger 4.0 4x4. I got almost everything I need to start the project. I got a 305 that's more then enough for this truck. And I'm looking around for a automatic 4x4 set up with the front drive shaft on the left side of the trany so i can hook up my front axle. After I finish it I'm going to lift it 4 inches and put some 33's(or 35's)under it and I think its going to look real sweet. Everyone's telling to give up on the truck but she's been pretty good other then overheating sometimes (head gasket going)and the dam cam sensor acting up on me(discontinued part).

Just put this up to get some suggestions or ideas. Don't mind any comments either. I like when people tell me I can't do something and I prove them wrong

It's all possible. You just have to ask yourself if its worth it. The 305's are shitty and don't make very much power. Do at least the 350. But if I were you I would do a 302. But if you're set on the Chevy, its definately possible. You can always do the 2wd transmission with a divorced drivers drop T case. I think some s10 stuff with the 4.3 will have the same bellhousing and maybe drivers side drop on the T case but not sure. And they might have slip yokes. Not familiar with s10 stuff. Just throwing out ideas if you really wanna go the Chevy route

I been looking around for Chevy half ton 4x4 transmissions. 2wd rangers have been done already but I'm looking for something different. I seen a few 4x4 ranger but there outsides have been modified to hold a retardedly big motor. Its easier for me to get ahold of sbc stuff then ford stuff in my area. I don't like then interior of a s10 or I would build on one of those.

I think it was in '88 they went to the driver side drop t-case in the fullsizes, so shop there for a that.

FWIW a 302 is physically smaller than a 305/350.

Another alternative I hear about in some areas is the late model LS based engines. They command a premium in my area but others on here say they all but fall from trees and don't bring a whole lot more than a good SBC.

A chevy 305 and 350 are the same size block for the most part. Chevy/GMC used the same block and put different cylinders in them for the different engine sizes.

The 4.3 share the same bellhousing pattern as the 305 and 350 if that helps. Really all you need to find is an s10 or the blazer s10 and with the 4.3 and you should be good as they had the driverside drop trasfercase.

I found a donor truck for my project. I need to save a little more money and I can get the truck. It will have everything I need to build up my ranger. I would go with a 302 but I've nothing but problems with ford motors(not just in rangers). That's why I'm going Chevy. I had a 305 in my one car and never gave me any problems til I started beatin the shit out of it. That's when I blew a rod threw the oil pan and locked the motor up. I'm not looking for the most power just more then what I've got now with this 4.0L.
