Whatever you do, it's going to make a mess. Been there, done that. When I did it the mess wasn't too bad, a bunch of oil speckles all over the frame and the floorboard underneath.
That’s called rust-proofing.

Crossed threads are tight threads.
If I need to run it in place, I usually just get the tires off the ground on some very sturdy jack stands and chock up the other end real god.

He has no driveshaft.

I twisted the driveshaft on a 85 jeep cj-7 once. (manual trans, 258-6) I removed it, locked the hubs & drove it as a front-drive that way for about 2 weeks. only issue was on tight turns because of the knuckle u-joints binding.

I would still bag the end to prevent dust getting in.
