Hey, y'all!

The meet n greet at Max Patch fell through. I think the weather was semi-ugly anyway. So, here's version 2;

June 14-16, 2024. We're going to camp at Round Mountain Campground. From there, we will visit Max Patch and explore various gravel and dirt roads in the area. The exact itinerary will depend on who shows up and what vehicles they have. This area is in the Pisgah National Forest.

Show up at the campground whenever you can on the 14th. This is a "put your fee in the envelope and stick it in the lockbox" kind of campground. So, bring cash or checks that you can put in the envelope. No reservations. The campground has what I call a glorified outhouse. I don't think there is running water. This campground can be reached easily with stock vehicles in 2wd on nicely maintained gravel roads. I was there a few days ago, driving a 2wd F250.

For the 4x4 people who want the total experience, we will meet and depart from the Haywood rest area on the westbound side of I-40 at 1:00pm on Friday. From there, we will take Hurricane Creek Rd to the campground. This road will require 4x4 and high clearance. Winches sometimes needed. Pinstriping is likely.

Saturday we will visit Max Patch for a 360degree view of Pisgah, looking across North Carolina and into Tennessee. From there, variable trail rides. If needed, we can keep it stock friendly. A ride to Buzzard Roost and out along the Goat trail is one possibility. If everyone has 4x4 and wants more technical trails, I will be prepared for that.

More info coming soon with links as appropriate. I would like to end up with a list of attendees here so I have an idea of group size.

So far;

it appears that Catpen Road and Rattlesnake Road may be interesting to explore. Just spent a few minutes in the AllTrails app.

I'm excited to get out there and explore. Would love for a few more to at least come camp. I will have Zane with me too. I will have plenty of farm fresh eggs. So we could do a community breakfast Sat or Sunday

Preliminary weather forecast is looking good. Yall come on out. Even if you just come to camp or drop by for fellowship for while Saturday evening.

Looking like I'm a go. Corey is doing better. She went to church this morning, and we went and got her car and brought it home. I'm looking forward to getting out in nature.
On a different note. Do you want to do a shared meal plan? I will get a dozen and/or half of eggs from my coworkers' chickens. So that's covered. I'm just getting my lists together.

What have you got in mind for shared meal plan? I have been pretty lazy about meal planning on my last few outings. We could do combined breakfast Saturday morning and combined dinner Saturday night. If you bring a bunch of eggs, I'll pick up some sausage. Would you prefer grits or home fried potatoes to go with eggs and saysage? Or we could do what I like to call "breakfast mess". That is; cook the sausage and potatoes together and then pour the eggs over it at the end and cover to cook it all in one big pan of deliciousness.

What about a dinner? Fajitas? Burgers? Brats?

What does Zane like?

Or, we could just ice down a couple watermelons and spit seeds at each other all evening long.

I'm good with the breakfast mess. Sounds good to me. Maybe I can get Corey to walk me through her burger mix and we could grill some burgers. Do they have fire pits and grills at the campground? I will have my fire pit. Plus I can through the little charcoal grill in the truck.

Second thought was how active are the bears haha. Should I bring an air horn and bear spray?

Did you notice any fire wood around. I will have my chainsaw. I have a bunch at the house if I need to load some.

Oh and Zane is a teen age boy. He would eat anything that won't eat him first haha

I seem to recall some nice fire pits/grills there. But I will have my little flat pack grill and charcoal with me in addition to Coleman stove.

Bears are active in Pisgah. We need to be careful with food storage. I won't discourage spray or air horns.

I saw lots of dead fall laying g around. I expect we should be able to collect more than enough firewood locally in very little time. I'll try to remember my Milwaukee Sawzalland a couple batteries. I also have a hand saw and hatchet.
