Hello all, I'm Jeremy from Quitman, MS. The last time I was here was probably 2001 or 2002 when I had a red 1992 Ranger Special Edition with the 2.3L manual and long wheelbase. Back then, I was mostly into lowering the suspension and swapping out the lights for clear lenses. :D

Today I bought a blue 1990 Ranger with the 2.9 but it's missing a 5-speed transmission. The truck is in pretty decent shape, the motor still turns, and looks like it had a fresh oil change before it was parked. So now I'm back mostly for help sourcing a replacement trans and any other odds and ends I may need to get this gem back on the road.

None in Mississippi. Here's one in Alabama. There were two different kinds, Mitsubishi or a Mazda/Toyo Koyo

Thanks for the links! Is there an easy way of telling which transmission it had without having the old trans to look at?

If you can find it, you want a Mazda. They bolt in exactly the same. A later 4.0 transmission will work too. It will have a different 1st gear though. Might make it hard to get started without slipping the clutch depending on tire size and gear ratio of the axle.

Atleast you seen the light and got a 2.9 instead of a 2.3. :)

Well I'm afraid I'll have to disappoint you. "LS240" was my call sign as an EMT some 20 years ago. I've been using that as my username ever since. :)

I looked at the door sticker and the trans code is "D" so I guess it had the Mitsubishi originally.

Yeah, that 1992 with the 2.3 hated steep hills. I remember one in Guntersville, AL that I couldn't get up faster than 35mph.

A friend of mine in high school had a 2.9 Ranger, and I remember it having pretty decent power.

Haha. My old 2.3 was a little weak. But my 2.3 eco is a monster haha. But I have no hate for the 2.9. I'd like to do a eco in a first gen. But heck I can barely afford to keep this one going. Woke up this morning g had to drop 300 on a battery 🤬

Ive never felt the 2.9 hurt for power. The 4 banger trucks i drove did though lol. A buddy of mine had an 85 (i think, 1st gen) 4wd with a 2.3. It couldnt push out of a wet paper bag.

I agree. My Bronco II had the original 2.8 that I converted and got rid of the computer system. It ran great but going up the mountain everyday I had it in 4th and to the floor. It did ok and didn't seem to mind it, though it would heat up some in hot weather doing it. Never overheated though.

I just swapped in a 1986 2.9 fuel injected engine in the same BII. I can climb the mountain in 5th with no problem, and with the pedal not on the floor. Runs cooler too with the same exact radiator. I get the same fuel mileage as the 2.8.
