I was having my 2007 Mazda B2300 right rear tire lock up a bit and make it hard to drive (rim and drum got really hot even on short drives). I took the wheel off to look at the brake even though i just replaced them the back drums less than a year ago. I replaced all the hardware, re-assembled the brake and on my test drive had the tire drag/lock up some more. It never really locked up but had to rev the engine and could feel the break wanting to stop the truck. Anyway, i put on my best keyboard warrior hat and found a thread here talking about the exact same problem and it being fixed by replacing the parking brake cable. It was a pain to do, but replacing the cable fixed my issue. Looking back I think the cable was sticking and getting worse over the past few years, it only got really bad 4 days ago. There was no place on the web that said they had a cable for a Mazda so i bought the one for the ranger and sure enough, it fit. Hindsight is crystal clear here, a week ago, no idea, even though the truck never rolled when stopped at a light with the clutch out and in neutral. That should have been a clue, but wasn't.... Sharing my story and adding it to the list of others who experienced the same issue.

I had a similar issue with my ‘98. The seals that keep the dirt and moisture out fail over time and let it in. Mix in winter weather and road salt, you get cables that will eventually hang up. Sooner or later we’ll all get it.
