88 2.9 auto
the 88 dies after a couple of hours of continuous driving. i decided to put in a remote tfi to eliminate the problem.
i bought a heat-sink off e-bay and cut out space for the TFI and wiring. i screwed it down to the battery shelf (the current battery is much smaller than the original so there is plenty of space)
i got the wiring from the TFI connector to the connection by the oil filler from an 86. and i used the 86 TFI to make a plug to put in the distributer.
i put the modified tfi beside the good tfi and marked the prongs-1, 2, and 3. i also tagged the ends of the wires on the modified tfi.
i put it all together and the truck wouldn't start. swapped out the TFI with a known to be good one, still no start.
put it back oem and towed the truck from florida to maine for vacation. tfi crapped out while leaf-peeping in vermont. waited an hour and it fired right up.
it did run perfectly to cruise the Tail of the Dragon outside of knoxville, tn.
am back florida and it is still giving me trouble. so again i moved the TFI to the heat sink and again it wont start.
question 1, is the TFI supposed to ground out thru the heat-sink?
question 2, will it work without the shielding being grounded?
question 3, what will happen if i change the 1 and 3 wires (i used a meter to make sure i was marking them right but am getting frustrated with this)
this is my 'hot rod'. so far i have put 96 I beams and brakes on the front and a removable hard-top kit on it (NEVER buy from airbagit/chasistech) after the ignition is fixed it will get a rear axle overhaul
