the 88 dies after a couple of hours of continuous driving. i decided to put in a remote tfi to eliminate the problem.
i bought a heat-sink off e-bay and cut out space for the TFI and wiring. i screwed it down to the battery shelf (the current battery is much smaller than the original so there is plenty of space)
i got the wiring from the TFI connector to the connection by the oil filler from an 86. and i used the 86 TFI to make a plug to put in the distributer.
i put the modified tfi beside the good tfi and marked the prongs-1, 2, and 3. i also tagged the ends of the wires on the modified tfi.
i put it all together and the truck wouldn't start. swapped out the TFI with a known to be good one, still no start.
put it back oem and towed the truck from florida to maine for vacation. tfi crapped out while leaf-peeping in vermont. waited an hour and it fired right up.
it did run perfectly to cruise the Tail of the Dragon outside of knoxville, tn.
am back florida and it is still giving me trouble. so again i moved the TFI to the heat sink and again it wont start.
question 1, is the TFI supposed to ground out thru the heat-sink?
question 2, will it work without the shielding being grounded?
question 3, what will happen if i change the 1 and 3 wires (i used a meter to make sure i was marking them right but am getting frustrated with this)
this is my 'hot rod'. so far i have put 96 I beams and brakes on the front and a removable hard-top kit on it (NEVER buy from airbagit/chasistech) after the ignition is fixed it will get a rear axle overhaul

found the problem. the 86 used a short wiring harness with plugs on each end, one round one to plug into the harness and a flat one to plug into the TFI. the 88 uses the same ends and looks like it is a simple plug it in to move the TFI. BUT the round plugs have different pins left out and there are 2 more wires on the 88 that come from the TFI and go further into the main harness.
fortunately the two wires are long enough that when i cut all the tape off the harness, they reached to the battery shelf. hardest parts were cutting the tape without cutting into any wires and taping it all back together again.
works fine now.

well, the truck started giving me problems again. seemed like TFI but i had moved it so wdf?
then the light came on. no, not the cel, the "idiot" light.
i had moved the wonky TFI but i hadn't replaced it. running cooler helped it but didn't ;fix' it.
so i bought a new one and installed it. did a couple of 5 mile runs, no problem. last monday did a long cruise. only it ended with AAA and a taxi ride. AAA will not let you ride with the driver due to covid. we were 25 miles from home and it was in the high 80's
truck cranked fine and had lots of fuel at the schrader valve but no spark
put the old TFI in and just grounded the back of it to the battery terminal; fired right up
O'reilly's exchanged the part and now i have the new new part in. worked great on a 60 mile round trip to apply for a job run today
days like this, sunshine, blue sky, not much traffic; this is why the great Ford made convertibles!

So he will splice into the PIP to run this new ignition and keep the old Ford computer happy also and be able to run the injection system? Has someone alreaady figured out how to easily mount the toothed gear onto a 2.9? Did the 2.9 have the gear for a couple of years before it was phased out?
