EDIT: thought I posted this last night, guess I forgot to hit submit.

Yeah, when I took that first one apart I didn't have heat available either, but it eventually came apart. I managed minimal damage, but still damage. When I do the other two I'll definitely be using heat.

Here's a few pictures of the one that I opened up and the speaker I'm probably going to use in it.

The original speaker as measured would probably be called a 5" speaker and it mounts to the inside of the box. I searched and can not find a 5" speaker with a mounting pattern like this, they all have a larger diameter mounting pattern.

Seems like common speaker sizes now are 4", 5.25", and 6.5". The narrow dimension of the face where the speaker mounts is just under 6", so the 6.5" is a no-go. The hole in the face isn't large enough to fit a 5.25" speaker basket through, though it may be big enough for the cone if mounted inside, I did not have one to try. Even if the 5.25" diameter speaker could be fitted, the grill is probably going to hang over the edge. Maybe not an issue for you, but not what I wanted. A 4" speaker seems to be an excellent fit. The basket will fit through the hole if you want to mount it on the face as I've shown here, the mounting holes match, and the grill fits about like the original.

I'd really like to reuse the stock grill as well, but that's going to take a little more experimenting. The new speaker I fitted is a Boss 4" 3-way. I'got it setting ont he outside of the box and the original grill is not deep enough to clear the speaker, but the speaker and grill fit int he space of the original speaker and grill. I tried test fitting it from the rear but the tweeters (?) still protruded too far for the original grill and I wasn't sure about the depth clearing the back of the box. I'm probably going to play with it a bit more and see if I can make the original grill work with the speaker mounted from the inside and a thin spacer ring.

I'll see about getting some more pictures of how that speaker fits, but it's late and I don't have a screw driver handy. (Probably one within arms reach, but it's buried under a pile of crap.)

Note, I'm not promoting Boss speakers, and I have no idea how good or bad they are. This size is getting hard to find locally and the ones I did find were too high priced so I Went online. These were priced right for trial fitting and they seemed to have decent reviews. The might be a little on the small side and the quality might not be the greatest, but I'm not an audiophile so I think they'll do ok.

They do fit mounted face down against the back vertical wall, with the seat all the way back. Sorry I thought we were talking subs.....my bad. My '83 was a single std cab, so I know.
Are you saying with the cone pointed towards the back vertical wall? If so, I wouldn't call that face down.

FYI you can find B pillar trim from some second gen trucks that has a speaker mount right down by the floor on both sides. The speakers are located kind of down in the cab corner. I have a pair that I pulled from a '92 single cab. They do NOT fit a first gen...however... the upper seat belt mount is in a different spot.

I believe those behind the seat speaker boxes were factory equipment on some trim levels going back to '87 and possibly prior to that. The '87 XLT that I sold earlier this year had them. I am thinking I saw them in a couple other earlier trucks too but I might be mistaken.

The truck I took em off was an 88, but it had a first gen face and dash... don't know if that means it was a 1st week of 88 and they were using up 87 parts or someone transplanted after a wreck... paint all matched red and showed the same color grey primer underneath.

Second gen, or what we call second gen, started with 89 model year.
