ABS Light came on 3 months ago. (96 XLT Ranger, 3.0L, Rear ABS, 7.5 RG)

I was driving down the road (SC) when the rear Pass wheel locked up and left a line of tread 50' long and dug into the shoulder (dirt) when I pulled over. I turned off the engine, then turned it back on, and the wheel was able to turn enough to get to a safer location.

Got it home (brother's trailer) jacked it up.

I proceeded to remove the Diff cover and there was no fluid (Oh Crap moment.) It looks like the Pinion seal failed.

Finally removed the cross pin bolt (stripped, ground the bolt and customized a wrench for the Bolt head; three types of thread release and Heat) and the rear axles. I was expecting damage of some kind (melted wheel bearing or a broke gear) but the Diff gears all looked OK with minor wear (I use Synthetics for all fluids) as did both of the rear wheel bearings and seals.

My questions are as follows:

1) No fluid, will that cause the rear Pass wheel to lock up? (With out damage) I'll be replacing the wheel bearings, seals and brake shoes (250K miles.)
2) Can the RWD ABS lock up a wheel?
3) Any suggestions?

Thank you.

James

==================
1. Lack of fluid would burn up the R&P which would result in complete rearend lock up after ALOT of howling.
2. The ABS system is designed to NOT lock up (Anti-lock Brake System).
3. What did the RR brakes look like or did you not pull the wheel & drum?

Sounds like you had a brake shoe spring pin break and let the shoe wedge itself into the drum.

Thank you for responding.

The Rear wheels are off and the axles are pulled; they (Wheel bearings, gears and axle splines (worn but not bad)) look good, I'll check the brakes again, (one of my initial thoughts) but the shoes are intack (I'll check some more - they are unevenly worn & especially the spring - hense will be changing.) Didn't check the pins yet - thanks for the idea.

Back out to remove the pinion bearing.

Again thank you.

Just removed Pin Seal and seal, BAD Bearing (I'm trying to save what I can.)
Again, thank you for the information.
