Hey guys, so my truck (97 ranger 4.0 OHV, 124K miles) has alwasy had a weird hop to it, some time i can notice i at slow speeds, its really bad above 60 MPH. I have a Skyjacker lift with rear lift springs and new shocks, i have checked my pinion angle and it seems right on at about 5 degree, i then recently discoverd one of my rims was bent ( rims that came on the truck and one more clue to suspecting a bent axle) when getting my tires balanced so i replaced it but that didnt fix it, i am thinking my rear axle shaft is bent, so a buddy and i put the rear up on jacks and put it in drive and are suspecting this axle may be my culprit. what do you guys think? I am getting new shafts, seals and bearing along with brake shoes and a rebuild kit tomorrow to replace it all but i would really like to know if you think of this video, could it be a tire issue or is this for sure a bent axle? we did remove the wheel and spin the axle and its less noticeable but both axles look a little wobbly, this one being the worst.

and yes i know i could get the explorer axle and swap it, but i dont want to get that far into it since i really need the truck for a long trip next week and dont feel like driving hours and hours with the vibration. so maybe if/when i decide to re-gear ill fully rebuild an explorer axle and swap it in. for now this is the route ive decided to go.

I would suggest moving the wheel to the front and see if the wobble/hop moves to the front.

Axle runout should be checked at the flange...

Good idea I don’t think I’ve done that, they are brand new BFG s but this tire was the one on the bent rim and now on the new rim it still took 4.5 oz to balance, but I put it up front and when the wife gets home we’ll be going on a drive and see if I can feel it up front. thanks for the input I’ll report back after the test drive

When it takes that much weight... I have broke the tire down and turned the tire 180 degrees on the wheel... then rebalance. Tires and wheels tend to have a heavy spot... when they line up... it takes more weight to offset the heavy spots.
