Rangers are fuel efficient?

i keep hearing people say that rangers are fuel efficient, and i have to dissagree. i have an 2006 4.0L 4wd 5spd and i'm getting around 16 to 17 mpg in day to day driving. best i ever got was 100% highway with premium gas and i got around 19.5mpg. If i look at the epa (http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.htm) it says i should get 16mpg(14.7l/100km), so i'm getting about the same.

Now, if i look at a new f-150 5.4L 4wd it says i'd get 14mpg (16.8l/100km). i'm gonna use metric from here on cause its what we use up here. if i were to drive a f-150 i would consume 2.1L more per 100km. seeing as on average i drive 17000km a year, that works out to 357L more per year. with gas at $1.35/L ($5.11 a gallon) it would cost me $535.50 per year. seems like a bit? well that would be $44.63 a month, or $11.16 a week. That would be $70 at the pump instead of $60 for me every week. not much of a difference if ya ask me.

i am considering getting an f-250 extended cab short box diesel. i hear that they get around 16-17mpg during mixed driving. lets say 16... thats the same as my ranger! but diesel is more money around here. lets say $1.40/L (not sure if its that high, but it most likely will be next year with the way its going) and we get $61.74 every week, or $2963.52 a year.

so, i can get something with twice the power, around 3 times the towing capacity, enough room for 2 more people, and bigger for $1.74 more per week?

i understand that the 4cyl rangers are gas sippers, but up here you can only get them in 2wd standard cab shortbox with no options. and its been that way for a long time. toyota makes a 4cyl 4wd taco that comes to canada for the 09 year, but i thought it would be a bad idea to bring up the t word. well seeing that i already did; $50.22 a week. but about $10more i could a 250...

I couldn't get it to work out either.:dntknw:

For a couple $k more I got a truck I can pull stuff with and consistantly gets 16-17mpg on the highway... and has room for 4 halfway normal people or up to 6 in a pinch.

I diesel SD would be nice, but I don't do enough heavy towing to justify it, and I really don't want to feed one on a long term basis. Both insurance and registration are terrible for F-250/350's. 10000lb plates are $300 a year for my dad's 1980 F-350, I don't even what to know what they would be for one that was made in this century.

I was going to keep my '85 no matter what, and it came down to it that even a 4.0 Ranger couldn't do much more than the '85, and would get the same milage as a half ton... so if I wanted more capibility than '85 I really had to go fullsize, or if I wanted better milage better milage I had to go with a car. A 2wd pickup was out of the question for sole transport so they were out from the start.

I like my ranger because I can squeeze around 21mpgs going to work and back and that is with the carb and 31" tires, and I can haul my 4 wheeler or the little skiff around and stuff. Because being a teen I would be lead footin' a V8 truck everywhere.:D

The v6 gets a few mpgs better then any v8 I know of besides like mustangs or something and it has enough power to pull anything i would ever need to pull around like wood and tools and so forth. And it is WAY easyer to park, 16' ish narrow ranger vs 20' ish wide f250 (I have both).

my 2.9 is efficient enough. and like you said it hauls everything I would need around. How else would I get my dirtbikes to the mall.;missingteeth;

well i dont know how you drive, but im getting 22mpg on avg. with my stock 05 ext cab 4x4 4.0 5 speed in my back and forth to work. try staying off the skinny peddle.

I still cant get over the fact that you spend less in gas in year then I spend in a month. I drop $700 a month in gas, then with my $300 ins payment, its costing me $1000 to drive my crappy 4 cyl truck.

Thats what annoys me! i don't drive it hard. i accelerate normally and shift at 3k rpms. i assume that the brush guard, 31" tires, and a couple tools (less than 100lbs) in the tool box would decrease the millage a bit, but it shouldn't be a 6mpg drop. All i can figure is that its from being at this altitude; Calgary is something like 3000ft above sea level.

and whats the deal with the 2.9L? i seen how efficient they are/were. why did they stop making them?

oh, and second on the avitar admiket....

They stopped making the 2.9 due to a lot of cracked heads. That, and they introduced the 3.0 as well as the 4.0, so they didn't need 3 V6's.

My 4.0 gets anywhere from 18-20. I am also at a high altitude too, though. But I also hypermill :)

I've got a 2003 FX4. I would say 95% of my driving is highway with a 50/50 split on 55 mph vs 65 mph. I average a shade over 20mpg in the summer. If I drive to my brother's place (~150 miles at 55 mph) I'll get around 21-22. I could get 21-22 going to work, but I'd have to drive 55 on the four lane, and I'm not going to be that guy...

My 01 3.0/5sp gets 22 mpg consistantly and the 86 2.9/4x4/auto get 18-20 most of the time, if I keep my foot out of it. Then again my 97 Dodge Cummins dually gets 21 mpg unloaded and 16 mpg towing 12,000 lbs

2.9, 5 spd, 4.10s, 33s, dragging around Warn 8000/bumper combo, Drawtite reciever hitch, 4' hi lift, fullsize spare and chokers/shackles=26+mpg freeway. Verified with gps. Gotta be the Pacesetter headers.

In my '07 B3000 manual I get the same mpg as you but when towing a boat with a 500-700 load of random stuff in the bed (covered by the soft tonneau). That goes down by a whopping 1 mpg if I accelerate fast but I get normally get 25-26 unloaded on the highway.
