ranger no spark

Had a no spark, no power to fuel pump issue with 86 ranger 2.3. engine would turn over. fuel pump ok, new fuel p. relay coil and icm tested ok. I took the computer out and for kicks, I tried and all of a sudden had spark! does this mean my EEC is bad? any help would be great, thanks. Mike.

That doesn't make sense to me that it would have spark without a eec. I just had this issue the other day and mine turned out to be a bad wire on the eec relay. Check those first. It should be a yellow wire coming in from the battery and a blue wire coming out to feed power to the eec when the relay clicks on. Also make sure the relay itself is good.

remove the spout connector if spark comes back the ecm is usually bad

And I didn't check for spark on mine without the eec plugged in but I know all the spark timing is controlled by the eec. I suppose it could have put itself in some kind of (for lack of a better term) limp mode for the spark with the eec unplugged but I'm not electrical engineer by any means.

Thanks everyone, I will try those things! But, if the EEC relay were bad, wouldn't I have more problems than no spark or fuel pump power? The engine still turns over, lights all work, etc.?

Mine was just the relay wire and everything on mine functioned as normal except for the fuel and spark.

Anybody cheak the inertia shut off switch. It will shut down the pump if its tripped
