I recently purchesed my first ranger (it's a 2002) but it only came with one key. I went to my local ford dealer and they said that it would cost me aproximatly $70-$75 to get and program a second key. Is there anyway that I can get a second key for cheaper?

Some locksmiths can cut and program PATS keys cheaper. Once you have two keys you can program your own, but you need to have 2 programmed keys.

Since most places charge one rate to program 1 to 8 (the max) keys, I'd get 2 or 3 cut if you can afford it and then ask them to do a "key code erase and program" since that will erase all other keys that may have been programmed in the past. That way you are sure no one else has keys to your truck.

+1 what adsm08 says. I used to think we could only get PATS keys at the dealership when you only had one key but I went to a locksmith one time and they were able to make duplicate keys for much less than the local dealership was charging.

Yeah you are definitely going to have to go to the dealer to get your second key cut and programmed. Just like adsm said, with only one key they have to go into the PCM with the IDS to let the truck accept the new key. With two keys adding a third is as simple as cycling your 2 programmed keys and starting the vehicle with the third. I usually program third keys for people for nothing since it takes just a couple seconds.

No, you CAN go to a locksmith. I'm sure not all of them have the proper tools to hook into the vehicle's computer but I was able to find one locally that had the computer to plug in and was able to make me a second key (and third) using the only key I had for the vehicle. I wan't a believer until they actually did it for me, I was sure I was going to have to go to the dealer and pay their ridiculous price (around $130, IIRC).

That is one serious locksmith, your average corner guy won't be able too.

The dealerships usually charge one hour shop time plus the price of the keys. It takes a while to go through the IDS.

Yeah, I was quite impressed he had the equipment myself.

I believe I have recommended locksmiths about 10 times in the last 2 months, finally people are believing me that they do have the junk to make/program the keys.

What is IDS?
Ford Integrated Diagnostic System.

The computer system used to get inside the vehicle's computer and check codes, programs FICM's, add keys and stuff like that.

You forgot about breaking the MyTouch system and blanking 6.4L PCMs. But those are stories for another time.

I've always known that they could CUT the keys, but when I saw one of your posts that was the first time I'd ever heard of a locksmith that had the equipment to program them.

you can always glue your original key in the steering column after you get some cheap keys from walmart made. as long as your original is by the ignition it will work... so you just permantly mount the original by the ignition.. lol.

this worked for a tauras that i worked on. she wanted the cheapest way possible to have 4 keys. so i got one 88 cent key made at walmart, found out it wouldn't stay running UNLESS i held the original by the ignition. so i set it up GOOD! lol hahahahaha
