For quite some time it was running like poo. I was "this" close to having it towed to a Pick-A-Part. Took forever to get it started. Exhaust smelled like it was burning butane (that really had me baffled). Decided to give it one last look, under the bed. EVAP hoses all totally rotted out. Eliminated them all. Now the EGR is gone, the EVAP is gone, the catalyst doesn't work (can tell by the smell). And it runs like a scalded cat. Starts on the first turn of the key. Hasn't done that in several years. Getting over 20 mpg now as well. Oddly enough, no check engine light and no PD codes are present. I don't get it. Yes, the light still comes on when the key in on, engine off. Yet those three monitors are INC.

Going to turn 184,000 soon. Looks like it will soldier on as my "beater" for a while longer. Not sure about Oklahoma, since we have no emissions checks here. But I know CA used to not check vehicles 25 years of age or older (not anymore). Mine will be 25 here in January. As of January, I've had it 23 years.

Its probably better to be self deprecating than self defecating.

What's the worst that could happen?
Now you've gone and done it...

Whenever I say that about mine something goes wrong -- never fails.

Nothing's gone wrong yet. Checked the mileage again yesterday after filling. 20.02 mpg. Best it's ever done in the 23 years I've owned it.
