Ranger Fuel Capacity

I am finding a wide range of answers to my search for the fuel tank capacity on my 1989 Ranger Extended Cab with a 2.9 6 cyl. Even the owners manual isn't clear. It only lists std cab and long bed. Anyone know for sure what would be in it? Same as the long bed? I have gotten information saying anything from 17 to 21 gals. Gauge does not work properly and I have changed tires and wheels.

i'm betting you have the 17 gal tank. don't think they made the ext cab with a long bed. my gas gauge is acting up as well, reading empty when there is still several more gallons inside. like you, i've changed tires and gears so i keep checking using mile markers on the freeway and my watch for mph/mpg numbers.

I think the 21 gal. was an option during that model year, but its probably best to play it safe and bet you have a 17 gal.

A 21-gallon fuel tank was optional on Rangers with the extended pickup bed.

There is still a slight difference of 20 liter, between the two tank .. should see in fill up

Owners Manual says the 21 was the optional for the LWB. Thing is, the Ext Cab WB is about a foot longer than the Long Bed. Seems like there would be plenty of room for the 21 on this truck. Wonder if there is somewhere to get dimensions of the tanks? I have not been able to find a website selling them.

Your Fill Up theory only works if you know how much is in the tank to start. With the gauge being bad there could be 5 gal in there and it take 16 appearing to be a 17 gal tank.

I have found a few websites that show the 17 as the tank that fits in front of the rear axle. Between driveshaft and body. The 21, or 23 as some call it, is the same as a BII tank that is behind the axle between the frame rails.

only the rangers with the reg cab and long bed came with the extra tank as an option. your extended cab only has the short bed on it and the larger tank will not fit it. not enough room for it under your truck. trying to shoehorn the 23 gal b2 tank where your spare tire goes is not doable as the frame is just different enough to not let it happen. if 17 gallons isn't enough, you can do what i did and put an aux tank in the bed.

That is a different page than what is in my '89 book. Maybe that means mine is from before 10/23/89

What does your book say for capacity? I assume it says 16.3 gal.

I think the change on 10/23/89 at least explains why different people have told you different things. Had I not looked at my owners manual and saw that I would have just told you that yours was a 19.5 gallon tank like mine is.

You can look at the build date on the card with tire pressure information on the driver's door jamb.

Yeah, I have a '90 Ranger, Supercab 4x4. It was built in August 1990 and has a 19.6 gallon tank.
