Hi there. was down in my field and my B2 2.9l ran out of gas. went down and got it a few gallons from the gas station and put it in and the fuel pump underneath the driver side isn’t kicking on. It’s a new fuel pump, what do you guys think?

Tap it with a ???
But may have been damaged running dry and overheated, if its still under warranty replace it

Can you hear the in tank pump?

Both only run for 2 seconds with key on, I assume you had someone cycling the key on and off while you were under the truck?

No, wasn’t under the truck. Thing is definitely loud enough to hear from sitting inside with the door open like I did. I kicked the key off as soon as it started happening so I’m not sure if it had enough time to overheat or not.

screwdriver handle, and anywhere on the metal part of the pump

Do you hear the fuel pump relay click on and then off?

Will do. Not sure, I’ll have to get someone to get in and turn the key while i have the hood popped and stand against the passenger side I’m guessing to hear it correct?

In 1988 fuel pump relay should be on passenger side inner fender, it will have a GREEN base
Brown base is the Computer relay, it clicks as well with key on

Tried putting another Fuel Pump Relay in it to see if that was the problem. I'm guessing the EEC Relay could cause the fuel pump to not kick on? I did try tapping the pump with the key on but no luck. I'm wondering if I burnt up the motor in the pump by running out of fuel.

Maybe you did not run out of gas. Possibly something else killed the engine and you still have that problem. Just something to consider. The pump could have even failed before running out of gas.

+1 ^^^

With OBD1 you can activate the FP relay manually for testing

In the engine bay on passenger side's main wiring harness is the OBD1 connector, may still have a cap on it with "EEC"

On this connector is a slot for Fuel Pump Relay's Ground activation
Diagram here: https://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/images/eec-iv_testing2.gif

If you use a jumper wire from battery negative(or any ground) to this labelled slot that will activate the FP Relay full time but ONLY when key is ON

This is so you can test for voltage on fuel pump wires, also tap pump again
This doesn't hurt anything, it is what the computer does when engine is running, FP Relay activated full time

Take the valve core out of the valve, put a hose over the end and into a clear glass jar, , and see if you get fuel out. I would say put a gauge on it, but, Ford requires an adapter not found in most fuel pressure kits for rent at the parts stores.
