I got a 01 Ranger with 4.0L axle code is 97.

1. Are the parts in the ford 8.8 interchangeable? like can run to a mustang with a LS diff pull it out, bolt it in and play? I know a few mustengs of them have the Ford 8.8 under them and I don't mind looking for parts.

2. Can I run over to a another ford car or truck with the 8.8. yank off the cover, slap it on my ranger, and way I go?

No carrier swap is quite that simple, you need to put your ring gear on it and get the backlash set correctly. Depending on the Mustang in question you may end up with a 31 spline carrier as well and that won't work for you.

The covers should all be the same though, except for the IRS diffs. Not sure if one of those would bolt to a solid axle.

We have used certain irs rear covers which are mounts....to mount shocks in the past.

So they fit....but are huge.

Some 8.8's are 28 spline and some are 31 spline so the axles and differentials are different.
AFAIK Explorers have 31 splines and Rangers have 28 splines. Mustangs I'm not sure about.
The 8.8 IRS diff cover is cast aluminum and has a drain plug and will fit a solid 8.8.

But you can swap side gears to make it work.

So as long is a 28 spline and I reuse my gear set. it should work.

Yes.

But the cost of that and labor....when your running stock gears, I would prefer to run the 31 spline explorer with rear disl If you can find the ratio. Depending on whether there's a sale or not I get them 50 to 150 bux complete at the u pull yards I shop at.
