Putting a Password on XP Pro folders

I have a network at work that is shared between 2 offices. I want to put passwords on everybody's personal folder so they can only get into the documents and they can only delete the documents.

I know XP Pro wont do it itself, but is there a good program that does it?

Just have the end users make their folders private. Right click on the appropriate folder, go to Properties in the dropdown, then Sharing tab, then check the 'make this folder private' box. When someone else logs in on that machine, it will be invisible to them.

That only works for different users on the PC, I need to lock folders on a network that are saved on a single PC.

We have a VPN with 2 offices saving items to 1 hard drive. I don't want others getting into or deleting items of someone else.

These folders, are they on a server? SAN? Perhaps map the drive to their personal folder and then it would be there just for that user, not for all users.

They are not on a server, just my PC in my office.

There are other files that they need access to that are in other folders.

I don't want a way around it, I just want to put a password on the folders.

Create a specific User Group with read/write and modify permissions...and add the users that need access...remove Everyone and anyone else other than an admin to take ownership (even though that is the default)...

Others can see the folder but cannot access it...if they need access then allow read only...

Not sure about a password program...never actually heard of one for that purpose...did you try the Microsoft site for possible answers or google for folder password protection?

That doesn't work either. It still is only for users of the PC and not users on the network.

I've configured shared folders with restrictions and local users cannot access the folder unless they are in the shared group...Windows XP....and it should work on Vista or Seven in a similar fashion...

Users on the Network need to be configured through the Server (AD) and allowed access that way...

I can try...open Active Directory...select New...Group (or OU)...add access rights and then members (or vice versa)...and then apply it to the folder on the server...remove Everyone and you should have restrictions in place...

You can do this through the Security tab on the actual folder...but try to put it in a sub directory (not on the root) and that makes the root inaccessible to anyone...you can make it a link on the server or on any network accessible drive if you want to...but the server is usually best (from what I understand)...

Try microsoft...search their knowledge base for AD "assigning user rights" and "restricted access to folders"...

But I guess it might help to know what server you are running...

The Server 2003 book and lab manual is about $80-120 (CDN) and it illustrates how to use Active Directory...comes with a PDF form of the e-book which I actually still have...I could send it to you but I don't have my home computer set up and the file is about 12Mb...let me know and I might be able to send it to you later today...

I think the test book is 70-290 or 70-291...that's what I learned it on...but I haven't used or even looked at AD for about three months...but once you learn it, it's pretty simple to use...

I am not running a "server" per say. It is on an XP Pro machine that I use as a desktop. We have a VPN for our Nashville, TN office and for anyone outside the Louisville office, and a local network in our Louisville, KY office.
