92' Ford Ranger Supercab with 2.9 V6................with 8.8 rear axle assembly for 99-2008 Ford Ranger.

Friends,

I have new drum brakes with my recently installed rear axle assembly. I want to let these drum brakes run their life cycle, and then be done with drums for good. I don't want to take up a lot of anyone's time.
This is something I would like to do maybe 3 years down the road. When that time comes, can I convert to rear disc brakes?

Would it generally go like this...............pull axle shafts...........bolt on disc brake backing plates/install disc brakes.........install parking brake system that does not use a drum.......and replace with compatible brake lines and master cylinder if needed

Like I said, no need to take up a lot of anyone's time right now. But is this doable?

There is a couple options out there to do a disc conversion. I believe they are all covered in the technical section. I think the Mustang conversion is the one that uses your existing axle to do the conversion but I’m not completely sure on that.

Yeah Sandman, I also heard that about the Mustang backing plate possibly crossing over.

I saw this rear disc brake setup that uses a smaller caliper mounted next to the primary caliper. The small caliper is the parking brake. No parking brake drum. Just a separate emergency brake system on the same rotor.
VERY expensive

That setup Ranger850 linked to would be the simplest, especially if you could find junkyard parts, don't know what the kit would cost...

Yep. Ranger850's procedure is the one I read about this weekend. Now I have to ask myself if it will be expensive and will there be good parts availability.

Look at LugNut4x4 for their Eldorado calipers and kits. No drum parking brake and was recommended by Bobby Walter

The mustangs brakes from that tech article don’t use drum parking brakes. They have a ratcheting cylinder in the rear caliper for the parking brake.

I would think anything mustang related is going to be the easiest to get cheap parts for since they are so common.

Cool. Someone earlier said to make sure my axle shafts are 28 spline. They are.
