Hello,
Ive been talking to a person selling a 2008 4cyl ranger and they sent me some frame pics and im not sure what to think of them. In the pictures below i see alot of black coating and am wondering if some one slapped some rubber paint on the underside.

Here is the listing for it, unfortunately its a facebook marketplace listing

That looks like the factory paint coming off the frame. I wouldnt think twice about buying it if it runs good and you like it

What's in those pictures look fine. The problem spots are on the frame behind the spring hangers, rockers, cab corners, and under the bed where on the cross members.

Get under there with a hammer or a screwdriver and poke at anything that looks suspicious.

Looks pretty good if it’s a rust belt truck. Nothing to worry about.

If it turns out to not be rotted underneath would you say 6k for this truck is a good deal or keep looking? The one thing i wondered was if some of these beds are black on the bottom like in the pic? The ones ive seen are colored like the body underneath.

That seems to be the rough going rate for that year range now.

As far as the black under the bed, it sounds like some sort of protective treatment was sprayed on. Mine is body colored underneath.

Yes, this looks like somebody crawled underneath with a spray can of something: no big woof. I took the bed off the back of mine, bought an $80 media blaster, made a quick pass or two, then painted it with POR 15. It is easy to paint under the cab with the bed off too. Ramps are helpful. Either take the cure or don't worry about it.

That’s just the factory frame coating. It’s like the consistency of asphalt seal coat.

It’s almost impossible to get off unless it falls off on its own.
