Well. Chinese manufacturers are still working, apparently.

When I was looking for forged pistons that were affordable, I started talking to a machine shop in China about a small order of forged pistons for cologne. I'm still dickering back and forth with three of them, they're a bit slow to respond at times right now. 😷

Sincerely trying to gage interest for the 2.9 and 2.8 guys, as few as there are. But, I've gone this far with it, might as well finish if it's worthwhile.

Going to cross post this to the UK forums as well, so, please, be nice?

Will talk to them as well about a run of 4.0 ohv ones as well if anyone is interested. Would just be a matter of scaling, easy for them.

Price each would be $11-35/each, we're still working through the quote.

I'm probably going to order at least a set for myself. If we can get a few sets committed, the price goes down. Wrist pins would be set up as 0.912 to allow drop in on $200 302 h beam rods to a shaved bearing. Will post the receipt when I have mine done.

Piston would be based on the 5.8 trinity dish top. Going to look at good cheap and readily available rings for it. 4200 vortec shares a bore size. Maybe there. Same with 4.0, though may just have it cut for sohc rings.

Block would need to be punched to 93.5mm. Name me one 2.9 on factory guts thst doesn't need it....

Either way. Sohc is an option as well.

Let me know. I'll give it a week or two. They don't seem to mind dragging it out

Deengineer until it is how Blue Oval should have sold it!!
Will these wind up having a higher compression ratio than the 2.8L Flat Top pistons in the 2.9L?

I have slowly leaned towards a 2.9 to put in a 4 eyed fox with a turbo so having access to a forged rotating assembly would be tits

Hmmmm I wonder what kind of tolerances a 2 dollar chinese piston has... :dntknw:

And how much of that "alloy" is composed of sand and fish bones? :dunno:

So, I already tried to farm this out through Ross, Diamond, JE, Mahle, Crower, and another American mfgr. None were interested.

Ross wouldn't even sell me one that they make for one of the German performance shops.

At this point, Chinese manufacturers are starving out. Prices are LOW.

I'm guessing ill have to make a refinement or two, plus have one of you thats competent with a set of micrometers go over a product sample.

Even at $20/ea, its worth it to me.

Current step is talking to a Canadian and a Venezuelan on Fiverr to have them drafted for China. Another one in Pakistan that Ive been talking to can do the CNC programming as well, so they would be plug and play off a download.

This is 2020. We can make stuff now. So, lets make stuff.

If this goes well, I already tracked down a machine shop in china that has made heads for some of the American aftermarket companies...

Tolerances can be seen, fixed etc. But not much you can do if the material is junk. China buys their metal from us as broken junk, melts it down and sells it back to us as soon to be broken junk. If you could get a material data sheet from them that would be awesome. Doesn't mean what you'll end up with is really what the sheet says but it's something. I have a durometer to test the hardess specs but only way to really know whats in the metal is with fancy lazers and science.

True, and agree. Hence the reason I'd e interested in having the CNC program made by the one dude. Worst case, you can hand a piece of bar stock and a flash drive to a local or online CNC shop.

As far as checking the base material for alloy, etc., i have access to a aerospace NDT lab that can do the neutron x-rays of them to check.
