I posted this same question a couple days back on a different site, and no replies. thought i would see what you guys think about this. cheers

On my shelf I have 3 boxes of Hastings rings for a straight 6 300 that are 4.030. My Cleveland is 4.030. This has me thinking if I can use these rings in the Cleveland. My thinking is they seem to be correct in sizes. after some cross referencing (Hastings site) the make up of the rings are as follows.

300CI X3 boxes

2m295
1st steel plasma moly
2nd grey iron phosphate
oil steel rail/ Chrome rail
stainless

351CI (has no engine style break down but 3 sets)

2m139
1st steel plasma moly
2nd grey iron phosphate
oil steel rail/ Chrome rail
stainless

2c139
1st grey iron Triple Chrome
2nd grey iron Phosphate
oil steel rail/ Chrome rail
stainless

139
1st grey iron Phosphate
2nd grey iron phosphate
oil steel rail/ Chrome rail
stainless

My thinking is I should be ok using the 2m529 as a set of 2m139 with the same material make up.

My question is, from my readings the plasma/moly top ring will take the heat of my Cleveland usage. non racing street engine.

any feedback on ring properties/usages in a Cleveland?

cheers

I like the moly type rings. They are more forgiving and seat better in the cylinder if the cylinder finish is not exactly how it should be. In other words, more dummy proof.

My credo
it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
I have had a harder time seating moly....but once they are happy....they happy long time.

For a street engine...if your not going for specific tension...try it if your having problems getting what you want.

Hastings historically also sells single sets (for one piston) so the info should be out there to confirm a cross between these. In other words “sets” are just made up of multiple single rings. There was a long time that you could buy just one ring…. Yes, one compression ring please! (and people did do repairs like that).

300 (4.9L) uses the same 4.0 inch ring set as a 302 (5.0L). 302 uses the same set as a 351c. (OEM cast pistons). Pretty sure you’re good.

Chrome rings should have a finer hone used in the cylinders than cast iron. It’s a harder surface and takes longer to break in than cast iron but will also wear much longer.

hi whisp.

Yes I was seeking out those singles also. but even there they don't give much more information than what I already had read. So yes I will put these in. I guess I was asking about this more on the preferences to see if anyone else has ever come across the same situation in the past about rings and make up materials. cheers

thanks all for your input.
