i have 99 ranger 4cyl no pats. swap is from 98 expo, i really dont want pats what are my options? also going to 5 speed. i pulled complete dash and column from expo, i like the idea of using expo column and gauges, it has a tach and tilt. but i prefer 1 key to open doors and start vehicle. electrical is not my strongest skill

You can have the explorer V8 computer reprogrammed with no PATS and no Automatic transmission software
Local Speed Shops can do that or know locals that do that
They can also match VIN and odometer if needed

Other option is to pull the explorer PATS module out, its above glove box
Plug it into the computers wiring harness
Pull out the transceiver and wiring from the column and short wire it to PATS module
Tape explorer key inside transceiver, and put it up under the dash somewhere
Then you can use your own keys to start and drive vehicle

PATS is ONLY used at startup, after that its not used, even if engine stalls you can restart it if you don't turn key off
The "Key on", computer boot up, is what starts the PATS test of the key in transceiver

But you will still have issues with manual transmission since computer won't see all the sensors and solenoids it needs to see with no automatic connected
So CEL(check engine light) would be on all the time with a whole long list of transmission codes
And you would never know if there was another code set, i.e. an engine code, unless you checked codes daily, lol

Don't have explorer PATS wiring but the 1999 Ranger will be the same, maybe different color wires and fuse numbers though

Break it right the first time. Fix it better the next time.
I wired pats into my 98 ranger and all the wiring was the same. Pats started in 99 model year for ranger so you might have all the wiring behind the dash to just plug the explorer module in.. If not mount the key and transceiver up above your brake pedal and away from any metal. I had intermittent starting issues because I mounted to the metal shield under the column and it was interfering with the signal.

thanks yall, i think im going to try to put expo column and cluster in, it has tilt, ill figure out the 2 different key situation later. how much wire from the module behind box do i need? i started to trace it down, the black/white splits like 5 times or more. again my electrical skills not the best.
edit: ill check what wiring is in the ranger if we catch a break in the cold rain, hopefully wiring is in there. i know the key is not pats tho

You don't need the whole column.. just the ring around the ignition switch and matching key. I took the ignition.switch out of thr explorer and put it along with the ring in the ranger steering column, the PATS box behind the glove box. Fired right up first lick

I'm the same height and weigh 230lbs. I feel your pain. I am getting ready to sell my ranger and by a full size. I am getting constant back pain and I know it's from riding in the ranger. Nothing wrong with the seat foam. I have to put a towel between my knee and the door panel.

ya ranger seat sux, i like the seats from my eddiebaur donor, passenger is in now. driver side i lose leg room, too much to be operating a clutch. i have a set of mid 90s camaro seats in my fullsize bronco, i may try those.

its prewied in the ranger, i swapped in tilt column and module behind airbag. plugged them in. well see what happens. i removed automatic shifter from column and display from expo gauges. im using them since it has a tach, any known wiring mods to get this tach to work?

Remove pin 8 Black/Yellow wire from 10 pin connector and remove the Black/White wire from pin 1 on the 16 pin connector and install the pin 8 Black/Yellow wire.

What do you do with black/white wire?

Leave the black/white wire out and put some tape around it.

Nothing to do with pats..but back problems...
I put foxbody seats in mine, which are taller than the ranger seats and believe it or not.. gives more leg room. I've got the leg supports you pull out on the front of the seats..helps out a lot on trips. I have a jacked up back myself. I'm 5'10 and my son is 6'3.. he has enough leg room.
