I got the opportunity to help 2 different rigs stuck on the trail recently ,one had a broken throttle cable the other had bent wheel (of course no spare and no front driveline either) losing air ,so we bent it back and pumped it up then got him unstuck. The point of this thread is to ask what hand tools should I bring -right now I have very few hand tools in the truck but lots of random stuff like a cresent wrench and a hammer head and 1 socket (10mm) .I want to fill my tool bag with useful stuff-this thread is for hand tools ,SAE or metric or a combo of items that fit both -what do you guys bring?

I only bring a screwdriver so I can remove the license plate.

I have a tool kit in my truck at all times. A combo kit runs anywhere from 60-120 bucks. Extra fluids. I even have a pump for my tcase fluid

I have a bag full of tools. Wrenchs hammers you name it. also carry an extra oil change with me when going off road. you never know. but most importantly never forget the duck tape and zip ties/ not kidding and bailing wire is worth its weight off road.

I always carry a full tool bag and extra cable and rope. I carry water and snacks. Two weeks ago I was out in my Wrangler with a buddy is his '03 Ranger. I had to pull him out a mud bog after I told him not to go in there. He was so happy I was along that day...since he likes to wheel a lot by himself. He now carries extra gear and water and snacks when he saw my took kit and supplies.

One thing I have found at the JY is that no matter what I have, there is always something I didn't think about.

Basic metric and standard socket sets, full open end wrench set, hammer, couple vice grips and cresent wrenches, assorted screwdrivers, spare tire (or two) a good jack for your vehicle, wrench to change tire... should be a decent start.

Beer. Enough so that if you break down without tools, you can survive at least one night!

You are so right about the zip ties-I will add ZIP TIES,DUCT TAPE,BALING & CHEAPO HAND PUMP to my load out . I will shop Harbor Freight for locking pliers and wrenches.I have lots of big stuff already(HiLift,shovel,axe,tow strap,air compressor,chain saw) but the stuff you guys have suggested is EXACTLY the kind of things I need! Keep suggesting,it felt so good to help those people on the trail then to tell them I was not expecting money-they had already been told "ten bucks or we leave ya" by some guy.

Stainless Steel safety wire, and the pliers.

Extra rubber valve stem, and a way to pull it through the wheel.

Slime tire plug kit.

I carry a few welding rods with me. I have two batterys, so in a pinch, using my two batterys, jumper cables and welding rod, you can "weld". It aint pretty, but it might get you home!

I use a old 35mm film canister to hold 15 or so water proof matches too!

Edit: on the valve stem, u could use the metal thread together kind, then you wouldnt have to have something to pull it through the wheel!!! I just like the rubber ones, so thats what i carry.

I will shop Harbor Freight for locking pliers and wrenches.

I would bring quality tools when out in the boondocks. What good is it when cheap tools breaks way out there ?? Big Whoppee if they honor returns...
But....If cheapies did help you get back to civilization, knock on wood-

I carry medium quality.... If you loose it, or lend it out and someone forgets to return it, meh, no biggie. I carry only wrenches, no sockets. Only 12pt wrenches too, 6pt limit your options.

I used to carry a bunch of s#!t, but i saw a buddy roll with a couple toolbox's full of stuff. Lucky he didnt get killed by all the crap flying around in there!!!!
Since then, i carry alot less tools.

Edit: i carry a 1-1/2" socket and 1/2" drive breakover bar for my lug nuts, and a 3-1/2" socket for my spindle nuts.

Went to Harbor Freight and got tape,zip ties and baling wire.put in a few valve stems already had dykes to install them.Great suggestions! Spring is here finaly and I can't wait to get on the trail !
