Does anyone know how the OSS works in a late model ranger? I'm in the midst of a 4x4 conversion, but not only does my donor tranny not have the sensor hole, but my 1354m doesn't have the hole either. :shok:
Does the OSS pick up a pulse off the shaft somehow? I have access to a machine shop, so I could machine the boss for the sensor if it is possible to make the sensor work where I need it.

Are you referring to the OSS, or the VSS? Both work in a similar way, but have different functions. The OSS is used to detect slippage and shift points. The VSS is used for speedometer and cruise...

M5od-R1HD. There is a sensor on the tail extension right now. I unplugged it and my speedo doesn't work now, so I know that's where I get my speedo signal. My donor tranny is a regular M5od-R1, which I'm pulling the tail shaft/extension housing out of. I haven't taken my original tranny apart yet... I'm just wondering if I may need to do some tinkering to make it work...
*edit* my truck is a 2008. Donor tranny is pre96 I believe. Tcase is 2003.

That would be your VSS. The tcase should have a provision for the VSS. You will need to either get another 54 from an earlier model, or you should be able to get any 54 (E or M) that had the VSS and use it for parts to adapt the VSS to your case...

So would this VSS be a gear based version, or does it pick up a pulse of some sort? The sensor on mine is different looking then the one on my other 2wd M5od-R1 from a 2.3L ranger. (planning on changing the 1st gear ratio to the lower 4 banger gearing... If it fits properly. I have 3 trannies right now and 2 tcases. One 1350m, and one 1354m. No boss on the 1350m either. Doh!) guess I'll have to look for another 1354 too.

In 95 they went from cable-driven speedo to an electronic one that used a signal from a variable reluctance sensor. A magnet and a tone ring that generates an AC voltage signal.
