Hi Everyone,
I need a little help from those that know the 2.3L engine.
I'm looking at buying a nice '87 regular cab short bed. ~130K miles. The body/frame is in great condition but the driveline is leaking from at least two places.
Engine leak: I cannot quite figure out the source of the leak. The driver's side of the engine is coated in a dirty oil haze so much so that all of the ancillaries (wiring, brake lines, steering shaft, intake, etc.) are coated as well. The owner (nice guy and very forthcoming) told me that he replaced the valve cover gasket last summer. I can see the fresh RTV so I'm inclined to believe him. The passenger side of the engine is bone dry.
1 - I'm wondering what else, besides the valve cover gasket, could be leaking oil on just one side of the motor?
2 - Transmission: coated in oil as well but I'm thinking it might be from the engine. It's the 5 speed Toyo Koygo box. Are these prone to leak?
3 - Differential: the pinion seal is clearly leaking. There's a mess on the under side of the bed as well as on the under side of the rear portion of the gas tank. This doesn't bother me as much as they're not terribly difficult to fix.
So, does anyone have any thoughts/ideas as to what might be causing such a mess on the motor (and what's involved in fixing it)? I don't mind doing mechanical work but would prefer not to have to remove/teardown the engine. And, an idea of what it's going to take to fix the issues will allow me to make an offer, if I decide to pursue that.
TIA, Dave.
