I'm in the middle of replacing my odometer worm gear everything was going fine until i went to put the new worm gear on. The new worm gear i got of ebay that is made out of delrin [so it won't disintegrate like the stock one] won't fit on the shaft of the motor. It it supposed to be a press on fit or just slip right on? It's so tight i can't get it on and if I'm going to have to drill it out i want to make sure i don't drill to big.
thanks

You'ld better ask the eBay seller, as I'm sure it's a custom made part, and it's unlikely that any of us have dealt with that exact part with those exact dimension.

It's also against the law to change the reading. Your best bet is to remove the speedometer and take it to a shop that specializes in speedometer repairs.

It is against the law to change the reading with fraudulent intent. It is perfectly legal to change a reading to make it more accurate (such as installing a replacement), or if you honestly disclose your change to a buyer. It is also legal to repair a broken odometer.

There's no need to go to a shop if you can do the work yourself, and if you're honest about what you did.

I got it figured out I put the gear in the freezer and then pressed it onto the shaft. It is not supposed to slide right on there is supposed to be some resistance. I just didn't want to break the tiny little thing.

Well I'm batting a thousand got it all put back together and it still doesn't work. Is there a way to test the little motor the gear turns on

From 1995-1997, check the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) on the transmission/transfercase. Could be bad.

1) Turn off vehicle and disconnect the VSS cable.

2) Using a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM), measure the resistance (DVOM ohmmeter function) between the sensor terminals on the VSS (not the cable).

3) If the resistance is 190-250 ohms, the sensor is okay.

Also, does the speedo work, but not the odometer?

4X4,...Did you put the gear even with the end of the shaft? I am waiting on parts to repair my 96 Ranger, also plan on upgrading to a tach unit from an Explorer.

FWIW, I plan on taking a picture of the original speedo unit (mileage), and the replacement unit after setting it to read the same, attaching to the veh. title.
