odometer quit working

Speedo still works but odometer quit. Easy fix? What other year model dashed are compatable with the 1886? Would like to haveo ne wuth a tachometer. Interchanable?

Shran did a tech article writeup on how to change the cluster to add tach and the general indication is that 83-86 (direct interchange??) could be made to work with up to an '88.

genuine ford parts search gives no such demon available, so can't give interchange for sure. Either way it is dead as dino - so you are lookin for a junkyard part only most likely.
car-parts.com shows some available.
The classics (40's-50's) guys I know have a place or two where you can mail in your broken and they will rebuild it, don't know for sure where as I went with a new cluster in my '48.

On a '96 you can pull a cluster with tach from a '95-00 or thereabouts Ranger or Explorer with tach and swap the whole thing in.

Apparently the odometer gears are known for stripping on these things at times, I haven't ran into that myself, I think it's a '95 up thing...

I think we should push back on the poster and ask what vehicle he is askin' about... , he asked about an 1886 (I assumed 1986 rather than a hand assembled Diamler model from Germany )... and you posted info on a 96.... assuming he meant 1996 I figure?

Their signature shows '96 so that's what I was going off of... on the older versions with full on cables ('83-94) they're usually all or nothing, on the next versions the odometers will apparently stop working, I've heard there's a replacement gear available but swapping to a tach cluster is nicer anyway... heck you can do that on your '90 too, I did it to mine, you would just need a '89-early '92 cluster... I don't remember what color the PCB is supposed to be but I looked a couple months ago...

My understanding on the newer clusters like 96 is that usually if the plastic gear goes, you have no odometer or speedometer. I did have to replace one on a friend’s 96 Explorer. You have to yank the cluster and tear it all apart for a tiny plastic worm gear on a small electric motor. Annoying, but not really difficult, I did it in a couple hours and spent most of that time talking and drinking beer. Little plastic gear was like $10 bucks online. I bought two extras to put in my parts inventory, lol

OP needs to be a little more clear on what vehicle we are supposed to be helping with. Post says 1886 so the natural assumption would be that he means 1986 since Ford Motor Company didn’t really exist until the early 1900’s, but in his vehicle information tag under his name it says 96. 86 and 96 as you pointed out use entirely different parts for odometer/speedometer.
