Yeah I know it's definitely a thing, and in the end it may not work out for us. We made an offer on a house, and the couple that lives there moved down 6 months ago and is already going back North, though not all the way to their native PA. We figured we have to give it a shot or we'll just do the 'what if' thing forever. Just funny how it's two extremes, no real in between. Either they're extremely happy for you and think it would be awesome or passionately tell you about how absolutely awful it is going to be.
It'll also be what you make of it. I'd say the halfway mark is TN (no state income tax) but you have to be careful there too - tornado alley - and it gets downright humid in the summers. What's that saying? You can run but you can't hide? LOL

That's kind of how we look at it. No matter where you live it has its good and bad points. It should be better for my wife's MS, the cold is hard on her. There are some things I think I'll miss from ND, but I really hope I never get to a point where I take the weather for granted.

I think one of the Carolinas ought to be good. I did some army training in Wisconsin once upon a time. War games and all- no ac, no showers, etc. All the locals were pittying us. I remember standing in the middle of an asphalt parking lot, cloudless day in july… and it was only a bit uncomfortable. Almost nice.

When you live in a place that can get to 50 below, I do not blame you!
