Non EGR to mak CA compliant

I have a 1994 ford ranger 4.0 v6
Arizona truck that doesn’t have a EGR and trying to get it smogged in CA has anybody ever ran into this or was able to add egr to vehicle

lived there 30 years, nope. and it’s only getting worse. cutoff for smog? was supposed to be 30 years old and keep going, last update to that was Arnold S. cause he got smog busted for his ‘76. so in other words nope . had to ditch my samurai because of it.

If you have a vehicle that is EPA emissions compliant, then all EPA emissions components that were on the vehicle when new are required. If it shipped with EGR, then EGR is required to pass an emissions test. So, if it was removed you have to put it back on. Generally, the only differences between EPA and CARB on most vehicles for the last 30 years is the catalytic converter and ECM calibrations. So, my guess is you should head to the wrecking yard and get the components needed to get the EGR working.

it’s crazy you say that cause my 99 came without EGR , also my replacement engine didn’t. but the CA models do. But the exhaust has a plug in it, so CA will see that as modified. best of luck to you.

Both the 93 and 94 OHV 4.0l could be either a Federal non-EGR (MFI-MAF-EDIS) or California EGR (SFI-MAF-EDIS) version; reference "How to Understand, Service and Modify Ford Fuel Injected & Electronic Engine Control", by Charles O. Probst, SAE.

DIFFERENCES:
1) upper intake manifold
2) driver's side exhaust manifold
3) engine bay wire harness (sequential fuel injection vs multi-port)
4) PCM
5) EGR components

If it has an EPA emissions sticker and it originally didn't have an EGR valve, then it will be compliant without the EGR. Its all about what was originally on the vehicle. And yes, I've heard of both EPA and CARB vehicles not having EGR. I think the Bureau of Automotive repair has a number that can be called to verify emissions with the VIN.
