alright i just bout this 1990 ranger 4x4. plan on making it a mud/trail rig and DD. gotta lift for it on the way and new intake. but anyway, truck has no exhaust, use to be my friends and he cut it off at the manifold, so no cat or anything, so obviously no back pressure=no power. can i throw on some duals with a cherry bomb on them for enough back pressure to get some power back or do i need to replace O2 sensors and Cat? i would rather not do that, expensive even doing it myself.

Ok, you are both idiots.

Hillbilly, you get the award because you are openly suggesting that you want to commit a federal offense by DDing a vehicle newer than 1975 without cats. It is illegal per FedDOT, irregardless of your local laws and can subject you to fines of up to $5000 per missing cat if you get caught.

Slip, you get one because you have seriously suggested running an EFI engine without an oxygen sensor. Will it work, yeah, will it live, no. It will foul plugs, suck fuel, and it will never be quite right.

I'll even throw one in for the PO of the truck for chopping the exhaust off without knowing anything about what he is doing.

Now, "backpressure" is a huge misconception. Your lack of power is related to your lack of exhaust but it has nothing to do with pressure. The way exhaust helps is actually more of a vacuum effect. The exhaust pulses move together and help draw each other down the line. You lose that effect as the pipe size increases. If you want true duals, I would try to stay at 2" or less.

That's exactly what I thought this was about: finding the bargain-basement solution.

Every one of their points are valid. I just want to add that there's doing things right, and then there's doing things cheap. Doing things cheap is likely to cause issues, which is what the point made by these gentlemen was was. I was trying to make suggestions on how to do things cheap.

For example, on my first vehicle, my cooling fan relay went out. Because I was so poor, and needed a fix to keep the vehicle moving for another 2 weeks until I could buy the new relay, I took the cheap way out. I alligator clipped the lead for the cooling fan directly to the battery. The result? 2 months after I had replaced the relay, the cooling fan motor itself went out.

My opinion is that, if the vehicle is disposable, go ahead and take the cheap way out. If it's a vehicle you care about running for longer than 6 months, then it will absolutely cost you less to do things the right way.

My credo
to prevent Found On the Road Dead, Fix Or Repair Daily
Most catless cars' exhaust smells differently than cat exhaust. I ranted for yrs about having to use cats. And all the other insults like lead free gas. EPA and the current ethanol boondoggle

I am a breast cancer survivor. It doesnt run in my family, so it was exposure to what my brother calls methyl-ethyl -bad stuff in my environment. I am a smoker ,currently in quit mode., on top of all the other crud I've inhaled whilst trying to make a living. So, the least I can do is keep cats on the exhaust. Least I can do is to show myself as a cautionary tale I'm lucky, I am down to 5 pills a day and only 2 doctors. .:D

In my opinion its like getting a rescue animal that has been abused and throwing it in a pen and never feeding it. Lets not mistake being broke with just being lazy. Do a proper diagnostic compression/vacuum tests if the engine is on its last leg by all means run it till it pukes. If the engine is in good shape still then you have to fix it correct or the ranger gods will haunt you for life.

True, and it is odd how different catted exhausts can smell too.

I think most of my allergy problems stem from an overly active sense of smell though... :icon_twisted:
