New Truck Thoughts

The RV for the trail rig makes a lot of sense for sure. Just a lot to maintain and they do not like the outdoors. That autotrader price is what made my mind start wondering, mine is a gasser but all the ones I see for sale are 40+ with 3+ times the miles...

My thoughts with the RV idea was that it’s cheaper to own than a tow rig and camper, or more precisely two tow rigs and a camper. I’ll still sleep in a tent, but I’m not getting younger and a more comfortable bed away from home has an appeal. Plus even when I’m not going off-roading, I could use it to take vacation trips places, even just a weekend trip. I had a German Shepherd that had serious separation anxiety, but traveled extremely well. Not all hotels are accommodating to pets and a lot around this area that are, want to charge extra (up to $100 per night) for a dog. With an RV, I don’t have that hassle. So after thinking it through, it’s a worthy thing for my situation

So a question for you. in the 4 years or so that you have owned the F250, how often have you actually needed a 3/4 ton truck to do your job? I mean that the Ranger or an F150 could not do? is it a handful of times? Is this truck there for you to do your job (the one that keeps the lights on and roof over your head, not side projects) If it is just to pull a camper, how often do you go camping with that rig?

of those 22k miles, how many of them did *you* put on it? for what its worth it sounds like you can do the same job with a smaller truck, I would sell (not trade) the 250. the KBB shots are trade in value, which will be a bit lower. look at all the dealers in the area, and sell it to the one who offers the most for it. you can probably get a bit more for it if you sell it yourself, but there is a lot of little things to keep track of and answer calls about it which 90 percent will be either tire kickers or scam artists...

Once you sell it and have the money in the bank, look at the F150 you want. Trade the Ranger in for it. if your camper is too large for the F150 to handle, consider getting one that is a better fit. if you get 55k for the 250, that will be a good downpayment on the new truck/ payoff the Ranger etc. I am of the same mind as SgtSandman though, it is good to have a third vehicle for unexpected downtime of your Daily driver... so there is that.

alternatively, go to Car Max or the local dealers and see what they will give you for the Ranger. you might pay it off and have enough to put down on something new, but my guess is your payments are going to be scary high...

To be honest though, if the 250 is paid for, I would keep it and the Ranger and wait until this crazyness in the automarket calms down. You at least know how both trucks run and won't have to mess with another car payment.

and the f150 doesn't get great mileage either. i have been test driving them while i was considering getting rid of my 2017 nissan titan. all the ecoboosts i drove get the same gas mileage as the 5.6 v8 in the titan when doing 80mph on the highway (normal texas highway speeds). i like the f150 but 18 on the highway is just not impressive for a 6 when my 8 already gets that

If it were me I'd trade (or sell) both and get a new 250 Powerstroke over the 150.

Now is a great time to sell vehicles but it is a terrible time to buy them because the prices are through the roof. I would say though that if you end up getting an F150 and you do any towing at all you should get one of the two Ecoboost engines because they will out pull any V-8 from any manufacturer of any size. I have all three engines in trucks and I love them all but the only thing the 5.0 does better than the Ecoboosts is sound good.

I am going to try and answer all of these at once
I have had a newer 5.0 150 and got 20 average before I lifted.

The 250 I just never cared to get rid of nice lower mileage truck I can do anything I need with

The ranger came about with a new position at work when my tuarus ate the torque converter and I required a reliable vehicle for traveling VA to southern NC regularly. So I negotiated the new position enough salary to cover the payment.

@Uncle Gump i agree and it’s a solid axle gas motor basic truck. But you also have to realize I would be getting a paid for new truck. I am working with a few dealers the new truck would have no payments as well. I’m not arguing this one way or another just weighing all my options

I guess I don't know enough about the capacities of the bigger trucks. But I feel like if towing/hauling is the objective... the F250 just seems to fit the bill better.

The Ford diesels are supposed to be million miles engines, USE IT!

I would keep the diesel for towing. If I were smart enough to own one I would tow everyone's stuff!!!!

My ‘20 F150 crew cab with the max tow package is rated for 12,700 lbs.
