Hey guys sorry it’s been a good min since I’ve been on… life is all sorts of fun most days ….. ANYWAYS… here is what I got going on

1994 Ranger XLT
4.0L OHV - I believe
2WD

I am attempting to get the timing chains done in this thing and it’s been kinda a nightmare… but I am to the timing cover and I cannot get the fucker off to save my life. It’s been down now 2 damn days (going on 3) and it’s killing me.

any one got some tips or tricks?… I’ve been beating on this fucker with a dead blow and trying to lightly (very lightly) pry on it… nothing is working… it’s pretty caked with oil and grease from a bad front main and timing gasket..

Here are some pics

Ok so update.
got the stupid ass timing cover off it lol

now I need to figure out setting this to TDC before removing the chain, sprockets & guides…

Do the dots on the sprockets point towards one another or both straight up to get TDC?

Timing marks always point to eachother for TDC (I'm sure there's exceptions, on the Limas they point to things on the block and timing cover...) but actually either works since you don't have to line up a distributor or even adjust the valves...

Propane torch and some form of lubricant. PB Blaster, ATF + Acetone, wax. Whatever you want.

Are you sure the sprocket won't come off over it? I didn't try mine.

I am 100% positive that it won’t come off over it… *as seen in pics* …. And this work has never been done before on this truck… so that key way piece has been sitting in there for 30 years… I managed to get it to move ever so slightly… but I can’t get the fucking thing out to save my life.
Unfortunately I do not own a torch… but my neighbor might.. I’ll talk to him today after work…

Do you know what that piece is actually called? In case I have to get another one… I don’t even know how to look it up. There are no videos anywhere on it or even like pictures of what someone else has done lol

**UPDATE**

So I got everything removed finally and all the new stuff is on… I broke my impact last night just before I was going to tighten up the harmonic balancer bolt lol … of course I did… anyways… I’ll have that zipped on tonight and all I have left is to put the radiator back in along with the fan & shroud.. fill her up with coolant and then fire her up and hope for the best haha

Here are some more pics for you guys

I'm a little late to the party here...

I typically use a punch and hammer on the rear of that key. Pushing it downward will "roll" the front of the key up. Then tap it up from the crank keyway.

Glad you figured it out... good luck firing it up.

Man, I hit that piece of shit with everything and for some reason I couldn't get it to budge.... I then hit it with some WD 40 and break cleaner a few times... let it sit overnight and then FINALLY got it to budge... it hasn't been touched in 30 years...

I am happy to get this job complete so I can move on to the next one lol
Next im changing the rear shocks, exhaust gasket, Rear break fluid line, MAF gasket, and then some typical Maintenace.. Breaks, tire rotation, and rear diff service.
I also need to finish my new headliner install and see about fabricating some running boards i just snagged off an 03 ranger edge lol

THEN... i need to also do the knock sensors in my wifes chevy tall-hoe HAHAHA its always something going on at my house

OH I TOTALLY FORGOT TO TELL YOU GUYS!!!

On this job i found out that the easiest way to reinstall the harmonic balancer was to use the Ford EcoBoost long reach installer... that harmonic balancer went on with such ease using that... I was super pumped about it..... Not too sure why i own one?... I have never owned an EcoBoost in my life lmao .... but it was in my tool bag and fuckin A it was glorious hahaha
