In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
That's your front crossmember. It us part of the frame. You can replace it with one of a different shape. But don't run without it. It has that funny shape because it also serves to protect steering components from damage.

I haven't had one for 17 years, but I don't play in rocks so meh... I don't know why the previous owner took it off, I probably would have left it but I have no strong feelings either way, the only replacement they put on is a beefier front bumper...
