Can you use any 8.8 28 spline trac-loc carrier. i found one out of a 97 mustang. I have a 97 ranger. the web site tells me it don't fit.

No.

A 28 spline carrier is going to be different then an 31 spline.

But if they are both the same, it will swap.

The carrier should be ok then, but the whole axel isn't going to fit.

I'm sure he's referring to a complete axle swap... spring mounts and such. Might even be a width difference.
